In the short term polluters can and should pay for building experience and technology development in the CDR sphere - on top of paying for their pollution. Mandy Rambharos and colleagues have just released a new Just Transition and Safeguards Framework. This framework provides a comprehensive blueprint for fostering inclusivity and social considerations within energy transition endeavors while offering a structured approach for assessing progress in this regard. Further, it underscores our belief that achieving sustainability in the energy sector necessitates a concerted effort to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders, particularly workers and communities dependent upon the fossil fuel industry. When the UK votes tomorrow, the environment and the climate crisis will be on many voters' minds, with the topic ranking as the fifth most important in polling by YouGov. We pay for governments failing to take the climate seriously in three ways: ⚡️ higher energy bills 💸 vast subsidies for fossil fuel companies, paid for by the public 🌊 floods, storms and heatwaves made more frequent and severe by global heating This makes climate action inherently linked to ending the cost of living crisis, the number one priority among voters. Cutting green policies has added £22bn to UK energy bills since 2015, according to analysis from Carbon Brief. Whoever next takes office, they should prioritise environmental and climate action. Leading the upgrade to clean energy and restoring the UK's disappearing wildlife benefits everyone. Our Climate Manifesto outlines the key steps: https://lnkd.in/dUcyFjy

Did you know that earlier this month, something cool happened and it's flying over our heads? The MethaneSAT satellite was launched on March 4, 2024, and it's a game-changer in our fight against climate change. This satellite, a joint effort between the Environmental Defense Fund and the New Zealand Space Agency, is equipped with advanced technology to detect methane emissions with incredible precision. It's like having a super-powered microscope in space, giving us a clearer picture of methane leaks from both large and small sources. This is crucial for making informed policy decisions, ensuring the safe use of natural gas, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. So next time you look up at the sky, remember that there's a satellite up there helping us protect our planet. The launch of a satellite named MethaneSAT is designed to track methane emissions worldwide. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas contributing to global warming, and its accurate monitoring is crucial for climate change mitigation efforts. MethaneSAT aims to provide high-resolution data on methane emissions, enabling better understanding and management of this environmental issue. The satellite utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including an advanced sensor system capable of detecting methane concentrations with unprecedented precision. This technology allows MethaneSAT to pinpoint emission sources and quantify their impact on the environment accurately. With its ability to detect even small leaks, the satellite promises to revolutionize methane monitoring on a global scale. MethaneSAT's data will be made publicly available, providing governments, scientists, and industries with valuable information for policy-making, research, and emissions reduction strategies. By democratizing access to methane data, the satellite empowers stakeholders to take proactive measures in addressing methane emissions, ultimately aiding in the fight against climate change. This highlights the collaborative efforts involved in MethaneSAT's development, including partnerships between environmental organizations, philanthropic foundations, and technology companies. This collaborative approach demonstrates a shared commitment to leveraging innovation for environmental conservation and sustainability. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships in tackling complex global challenges. In conclusion, MethaneSAT represents a significant advancement in methane monitoring technology, offering unprecedented accuracy and accessibility in tracking methane emissions worldwide. By providing actionable data to stakeholders, the satellite has the potential to drive meaningful change in mitigating climate change and promoting environmental stewardship. #methaneemissions #climatechangeaction

"The establishment #press has failed to cover #energy corporations’ contributions to the #climatecrisis, including how #fossilfuel money skews university climate and energy #research, and how fossil fuel investors have sued national governments to block climate #regulations... in 32 of the 40 forest-offset projects investigated, the claims concerning forest protection and emission reductions were overstated by an average of 400 percent...utilities including #PGandE and #CommonwealthEdison were well aware of the threats posed by climate change but adopted a strategy of “climate denial, doubt, and delay” to continue investing in polluting infrastructure for “several decades longer than scientists have advised is safe...entire tribal towns in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest are being forced to relocate due to climate change...evidence of health risks for people who live nearby oil and gas extraction sites...corporate media has also largely ignored efforts by #CleanCreatives, a movement of workers within the most prominent advertising and #PR agencies, to end their employers’ ties to fossil fuel companies." https://lnkd.in/ecSjWPDY

We are Superheroes too! We are Talesca are serious advocates in banning single-use plastics becuase these things significantly harm the environment by contributing to pollution in landfills, rivers, lakes, and oceans. They take a long time to decompose, releasing harmful chemicals in the process. An estimated 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the marine environment annually, posing a major threat to marine life. ROGUE METHANE RELEASES - STOP THEM FOR THE BIG WIN I've had some good responses from the local calls I made yesterday about stopping rogue methane emissions locally (this is low-hanging fruit). I've shared the Harvard website about it because they have the health effects (with background studies), policy suggestions, plus short summaries to help brief the legislator: https://lnkd.in/gHkspCqt And the satellite website that will provide the methane data for free: www.MethaneSAT.org TIPS FOR CALLING I first identified myself as a constituent, a retired public health nurse specializing in maternal child health, and that I'm concerned about rogue methane releases because: "Methane–a powerful greenhouse gas–is nearly always emitted alongside heath-damaging air pollutants (HDAPs). Exposure to even small amounts of these HDAPs can cause premature birth, asthma, cancer, and other adverse health impacts." Stopping this pollution would be a big win because it not only reduces short-term warming (methane traps 80X the heat that CO2 traps short-term), but the communities near these rogue emmitters are often low income communities, so in addition to health impacts to individuals, states are having to pay additional healthcare costs associated with this pollution. Nearby communities are also often black and brown with additional pollution exposures that can further compound unfair health inequities. There may already be legislation to fine these emissions, but if those are low, it may be cheaper/easier for superemitters to just pay fines. So if that is the case, fines would need strengthening (appropriate since the state, federal government, and private sector are having to cover additional healthcare costs associated with their pollution). Perhaps an increasing fee if the releases are not addressed? I called my US, county, and state reps. Left messages with some, had great conversations with the live calls. Suggested to governor's office that perhaps if superemitters are identified in MN, the AG's office might see if there are already ways to address. One legislative aid recommended a committee to share this info with which I sent today. I'm excited about this satellite! No longer will it be vague methane emissions "somewhere." Now we'll know who is doing it, how much and we'll know which communities are being harmed the most. We can help educate our communities and elected representatives. Transparency is powerful. Shine that light, MethaneSAT! #pollution #accountability #win #healthandwellness #protectchildren #rogue #emissions #methane #methaneemissions
