I just finished reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, who was the Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD and is known as one of the 5 Good Emperors of Rome. In my exploration of Meditations, I have selected what I believe are the top five teachings from his journals. These teachings offer a glimpse into the mind of a philosopher-emperor, providing timeless wisdom and insight into human nature and personal conduct. I've chosen to present these teachings in their original form without additional commentary, allowing each reader to interpret and reflect on them individually. #Stoicism #Leadership #PersonalGrowth #Wisdom #Meditations

Plutarch’s monumental work “Parallel Lives” could equally have been called: A guide of comparative leadership. “Parallel Lives” is a series of b#iographies of famous men, arranged in pairs to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings. Written in the early 2nd century BC by the Greek Roman biographer Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, Plutarch to most, this work consists of twenty-three pairs of biographies, each pairing a Greek with a Roman, and four single biographies. Think wine and cheese for history’s exemplary. The objective was to offer examples of good and bad character, drawn from both the Greek and Roman worlds, to educate and inspire moral improvement in readers by putting them in contact with models of leadership drawn from distant and recent history (and occasionally legendary). Plutarch knew how to tell a compelling story. Each pair consists of one Greek and one Roman biography. For example, the lives of Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar are paired, highlighting their similarities and differences. After each pair, Plutarch often includes a comparison or synkrisis, where he directly compares the two figures, discussing their virtues and vices, and drawing moral lessons. There are 50 biographies in all, 46 of which are paired together. The rest are single biographies. And of the 50 historical figures covered, all held political or military leadership roles. "The Happiest Man on Earth," written by Eddie Jaku, is an exceptional and essential book that leaves us feeling blessed and grateful for life. Despite enduring a series of humiliations during World War II, including being labeled as Jews in Germany and witnessing the scattering of his entire family to death camps, Eddie persevered through unimaginable suffering. Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day. Despite seven years filled with brutality, he escaped from the death camp. With immense pain, he chose to name the book "The Happiest Man on Earth," which is a big surprise. The author imparts valuable leadership lessons: - Everyone always has a choice to be good or bad, and it is up to us to decide. - Expressing gratitude and acknowledging blessings from the universe. - Maintaining a positive attitude despite immense pain. - Recognizing the shared humanity in everyone's struggles. - Believing in the power of each individual to make a positive change in the world. - Emphasizing the importance of persistence and taking small steps forward every day. - Prioritizing values over material possessions, power, or money.

It's not all about ideology. Pragmatism can achieve superior results. I am currently reading Leadership: Six Studies in World Strategy by the late Henry Kissinger. This excerpt, from the chapter on Richard Nixon, stands out. We may have a clear objective in mind. But our methods matter. These include being pragmatic, low-key, and sensitive to the needs, objectives and sentiments of our counterparties. Otherwise, we may bask in the sanctity of our self-proclaimed righteousness. But our objective remains in the realm of pipe dreams rather than reality. #pragmatism #ideology #internationalrelations
