According to Heena Singh, a Senior Executive Email Marketer at BCC Research, in her article "The Future of Eco-Friendly Cement: Green Cement," green cement maintains high quality and durability standards and significantly lessens environmental impact. The global market for green cement is projected to expand at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12.6 percent, potentially reaching a market value of $57.8 billion by 2028. Decarbonizing a hard-to-abate sector like cement requires going beyond business as usual. As Daniel Boero Vargas wrote in a recent piece for the World Economic Forum, "Suppliers must think boldly in terms of scale and technology; not just to reduce carbon emissions from existing processes, but reimagine how cement is produced." He points to Brimstone’s technology, which produces both ordinary portland cement and supplementary cementitious material from a single carbon-free rock, as a prime example of this kind of transformative solution. Carbon Free Cement! Right when I start getting down about the state of the world, BAM, some great news. Not a lot of details here about the chemistry although one can start to see approximately how this works. Just don't start the process with CaCO3 (Limestone), or if one does start with CaCO3, don't drive off the CO2 with a fossil fuel powered kiln to make CaO (Portland Cement) or Ca(OH)2 (Slaked Lime). There are other routes, other methods better than net zero to get to CaO. Don't get me wrong, Net Zero is great, but instead of saying I want to walk on the Earth more lightly, while the earth is getting trampled by 8 billion footprints, where I walk, I want flowers to grow. Editors Note: Climate Positive/Ecosystem Positive....should be a big green sticker that triple bottom line companies can put on their green products. Climate Negative/Ecosystem Negative...a big RED sticker to put on products from single bottom line companies, lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of single bottom line products. Why should I buy those single bottom line products? Don't I have a right/desire to live on a world with healthy animals, insects, plants, soil, water, clean air, stable climate, abundant renewable/sustainable resources? Guess which products I want to buy? A clear message coming from yesterday’s Alliance for Low-Carbon Cement & Concrete roundtable on the #NetZero roadmap, was the need to accelerate emissions reduction from cement. Attended by leading companies in the #LowCarbonCement industry, policymakers and NGOs, attendees discussed how to accelerate the adoption of a range of existing solutions which can deliver substantial CO2 reductions by 2030.     ⌛ Now is the time to raise ambitions for cement, one of the world’s most carbon-intensive sectors. The cement and concrete industry has established new targets to lower and even eliminate emissions, such as those set by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA). These targets aim for a 20% reduction of CO2 per metric ton of cement and a 25% reduction of CO2 per cubic metre of concrete by 2030 compared to 2020 levels. The GCCA calls for complete decarbonisation by 2050. Austria's Cement Industry Leads the Way Towards a Green Future with Green Cement - As a CO2-intensive sector, we have been addressing our responsibilities for years. The Austrian cement industry is fully committed to contributing to climate protection. As a 'hard to abate' industry, CO2 capture, utilization, and storage are the most significant challenges for our company. "Political support is imperative for a CO2-free industrial production landscape in Austria," says Berthold Kren. "We specifically require robust infrastructure for renewable electricity expansion, as well as for CO2 and hydrogen transportation and storage," adds Sebastian Spaun, Managing Director of VÖZ. "Countries like Norway and Denmark are already ahead, benefiting from better conditions and substantial subsidies. Austria must not fall behind," warns Kren. A key focus of the Austrian cement industry is further reducing CO2 emissions in cement production, which currently accounts for around three percent of Austria's emissions. Austria holds the record for the lowest CO2 footprint per ton of cement produced globally. VÖZ members are actively working on climate protection and a circular economy: "A green transformation requires a collective effort from the construction industry, clients, and policymakers," urges Spaun.
