Today is National Supported Internship Day 2024 🎉 💼 Did you Only 4.8% of people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism are in Paid Employment? What is a Supported Internship 🤔 Supported Internships such as DFN Project SEARCH help individuals who have a Learning Disability and/or Autism become ready to step into the world of work, by gaining the skills, Knowledge and confidence they need to become Job ready. Project Search does this by doing both classroom work and workplace rotations where they will have support from Job Coach, Tutor and mentor to gain transferable skills and knowledge that they can use in their future Career. To highlight the Importance of Supported Internships such as DFN Project SEARCH and the opportunities they create for people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism, We spoke to some of the Interns and their Families to get their thoughts on Project Search and how its helped them. We can't talk about internships and career development without mentioning the disparity in employment for people on the Autism spectrum. Recent studies indicate that up to 85% of adults with autism are unemployed due to discrimination and a lack of understanding of the unique skill sets that people with autism bring to the workforce. Thankfully, there are some roarsome organizations, foundations, and companies that are working to change that, and we'd like to highlight one—@arc-of-monroe-county and their SELF employment readiness internship. We know most autistic young people want to work but face stigma, rejection and a lack of opportunity in the current job market. #AutismAcceptanceWeek We want to stop this cycle before it begins for the next generation of autistic young people, by building a bridge from education into employment. Our Employ Autism programme offers autistic people paid internship opportunities in autism-supportive environments. Our programme gives autistic young people a better chance of securing work, and increases the awareness, attitudes and confidence of employers to benefit from a neurodivergent workforce. #WAAW24

Today is #NationalSupportedInternshipDay! Did you know only 4.8% of people in England with a learning disability and/or autism go on to secure paid employment. We need to change this and that’s why we’re calling on YOU to support young disabled people into employment by becoming a supported internship provider. ✨ Supported Internships are a work-based study programme for 16 to 24 years old with SEND and can help kickstart a young person’s career and put them on the path to employment. 🙌 That’s why DFN Project SEARCH have launched National Supported Internship Day to raise awareness of the impact of supported internships can have on the lives of young people. DFN Project SEARCH’s supported internships have seen up to 70% of their graduates gain paid employment, and it’s not just the interns who benefit but wider society benefits from a diverse talent pool. At LSU, we believe that financial constraints, such as living costs or travel expenses, shouldn't cause students to miss out on an internship offer. Hello Everyone, Today is National Supported Internship Day 2024! 🎉 💼 Did know you Only 4.8% of people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism are in Paid Employment? To highlight the Importance of Supported Internships such as DFN Project SEARCH and the opportunities they create for people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism, I spoke to some of the Interns and their Families to get their thoughts on Project Search and how its helped them. This Q&A is by Hayden an Intern on this years Project Search Programme. please keep reading to hear his thoughts.... Q1. How did you find out about Project Search? I found out about Project Search over 25's programme from my Social Worker. Q2. What do you think about Project Search? It’s a good way to meet new people and for people to build their Confidence and Self-Esteem. By meeting other people and interacting with them I have improved my Communication and Social Skills. It’s a great way to introduce people to the world of work and give them the skills, qualifications and confidence to do this.   Q3. Has your Confidence grown since starting Project Search? Since starting Project Search and my confidence has grown, and this has meant that I feel comfortable asking for help.   Q4. If Project Search has helped you - how has it helped you?   Being on Project Search has helped me with my confidence and has given me valuable experience by going on rotations and has improved my Communication Skills and has taught about Work ethics and Health and Safety. Q5. Would you recommend Project Search to other people?   I would definitely recommend Project Search to other people as it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. It helps to put your foot in the door get valuable work experience and learn about the world of work.  It encourages employers to actually listen and employ people who are Neurodiverse as it shows them that we can do it for example: I have an excellent attention to detail and we can also bring a different perspective and unique ideas to the workplace.   Q6. What would you like to do in the future?   I would really like to have a career in Photography as this is something I love because everyday is a challenge trying to think what to photograph (it’s a bit like one day when you feel down and the next day your fine) and no day is the same. #NSID2024 #NationalSupportedInternshipDay #SupportedEmployment #Autism #LearningDisability #Inclusion #Neurodiversity #DFNProjectSearch
