Last week, we had the privilege of hosting state lawmakers and local leaders at our Pueblo Distribution Center to discuss food insecurity and the vital role Care and Share Food Bank plays in our community. Our CEO, Nate Springer, emphasized the importance of these visits, not only to showcase our efforts but also to highlight the help we need to better serve our area. Between July 2023 and June 2024, we distributed 25.2 million pounds of food across our three distribution centers in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Alamosa—equivalent to about 21 million meals. While this doesn’t completely solve hunger, it’s a significant step forward. With the support of 289 partners in 29 counties across Southern Colorado, we’re working together to make a real impact in the fight against hunger. These discussions with lawmakers are crucial to ensuring we can continue improving and expanding our services to reach even more people in need. Feeding Colorado FOX21 News

HUNGER CAN'T WAIT — The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina - an Action Pathways Inc. program - has introduced a farmer's market at its Food Distribution Center in Fayetteville, where those facing hunger can choose fresh produce and meats, and it has been a game-changer. On average, 200 families have taken advantage of the market each time it is open, a testament to the program's success and the community's support. SHFB is committed to expanding these markets to communities in its 7-county service area where the need is urgent. In this service area, 16.7%, or over 130,000 individuals, are food insecure. Together, we can make a significant difference in these communities because HUNGER CAN'T WAIT! The level of food insecurity in New York City has increased significantly since the beginning of the pandemic. According to an analysis by Feeding America, the number of New York City residents struggling with food insecurity has risen by 36% overall and by 46% among children. We are grateful to our grantee partner City Harvest for responding to the crisis. They have rescued more than 1 billion pounds of nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste—working with restaurants, wholesalers, grocery stores, farms, and other partners— to distribute that food to individuals and families in need. If you even loosely follow the news in Minnesota, you probably already know that we once again broke the record for most food shelf visits ever, at 7.5 million in 2023. You may also know that Second Harvest Heartland is ponying up to do something about it, starting with our new #MakeHungerHistory initiative, which aims to cut hunger in half by 2030. I wrote a little something about it and hope you'll check it out: https://lnkd.in/gP8e3tTC Kudos to Allison O'Toole for setting the vision, the Board of Directors for embracing it, and all my incredible colleagues who are already working to make this a reality. It'll take a whole-of-community effort to get it done, and it won't happen without additional investments and policies that target hunger at its roots. Which is why hunger is, ultimately, a policy choice. Let's choose to end it - starting by cutting it in half over the next six years. #mnleg #hunger #foodsecurity #foodinsecurity #moonshot #Minnesota #advocacy

Non sibi, sed suis While resources are provided for food on-campus, there are still segments of students that experience difficulties with accessing food. As a result, a trio of students formed Students Against Food Insecurity (SAFI), which has partnered with various organizations and departments to distribute over 3,500 pounds of food to the Tulane community. Learn more about the efforts and positive changes SAFI has brought to Uptown. 📰: bit.ly/4clvvgz

In a continuation of efforts to combat food insecurity, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is rallying together with community partners to raise awareness for the invaluable programs and resources available to residents in need. Latimer said: “Too often the struggle against food insecurity is silent. You may feel alone or trapped, but you don’t have to be. Together, we can unveil the strength within Westchester, ensuring that no one faces these challenges in the dark – collectively illuminating a path towards a more resilient future." Under the Latimer administration, the priority for combatting food insecurity in Westchester began in 2018, until formally expanding into the Westchester County Food Security Initiative (FSI) in 2020. This comprehensive initiative brought an increased $5 million in funding, grant access and strategic capacity-building resources for Feeding Westchester and local food pantries at a critical time – serving to address the mounting community needs and logistical obstacles brought on by the immediacy of the pandemic.
