The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)’ World Trade Center Health Program, which provides medical monitoring and treatment benefits to 9/11 responders, is extending eligibility to new beneficiaries. The new rule will resolve coverage gaps for Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, responders, federal personnel, contractors and uniformed service members that responded to the attacks. Thanks to HHS for recognizing the sacrifices made by these individuals and ensuring they receive the comprehensive, high-quality care they deserve -- it's an important step in honoring their service and addressing the long-term health impacts they may face. Did you know the SHSU Institute for Homeland Security hosts technical paper series on our website, ihsonline.org? The non-partisan series features papers with various viewpoints and examines critical and timely issues facing homeland security. In today’s “Research Spotlight,” we feature Eric S. Clay's paper, “The Rise of Workplace Violence: Addressing Healthcare’s Greatest Threat Driving Transformational Change in Healthcare Security." Workplace violence (WPV), specifically Patient-Generated Violence (PGV), committed in healthcare facilities represents a significant threat to not only caregivers, but to access to quality healthcare and patient outcomes. PGV is the most common form of violence in the healthcare setting, occurring in emergency departments, inpatient units, behavioral health units and home health settings. Current research has identified staff, environmental and patient risk factors as the major precursors of WPV committed by patients. Healthcare workers experience significant physical and psychological consequences as a result of PGV. A review of the evidence, alongside interviews with industry thought leaders, was conducted to identify current evidence-based interventions that can help healthcare organizations eliminate or reduce incidents of PGV. Health Sector: When Trust is Breached, Confidence is Shaken. I have been watching reporting that staff at a private London hospital tried to access the Princess of Wales' medical records without authorization. This incident underscores why healthcare providers must have robust safeguards and staff training in place to prevent unlawful snooping into patients' sensitive personal health data. These safeguards, of course, apply to other sectors as well. A good place to start? A vulnerability assessment for your data.
