April is a month of many important health observances! Join us in recognizing National Minority Health Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, and National Public Health Week. National Minority Health Month is a chance to highlight the importance of improving the health of racial and ethnic minority communities and reducing health disparities. Alcohol Awareness Month is an opportunity to understand the health effects of alcohol use and misuse and encourage healthy choices. Lastly, National Public Health Week recognizes the contributions of public health and this year’s theme, “Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health,” focuses on the interconnectedness of health and community well-being. Let's get involved by sharing APHA’s social media toolkit with our networks and encourage others to register for APHA-sponsored events during the week. We must follow the science, evidence based, save lives etc. etc. Do those words sounds framiliar? Maybe the same type of words and mantras that were just disproven in almost all areas of covid? I applaud the passion of these folks to help those suffering from addiction. But harm reduction approaches like this are not new and are clearly not working. Follow “The science” should be a red flag term. Science by nature is about questioning, not accepting. I want to saves lives as well, enabling drug use under the guise of offering treatment to those actively in addiction is not working. Harm reduction is also too broad a term. It has now become a catch all a variety of practices, some beneficial (like medically assisted treatment). But other practices under harm reduction that provides supplies to those which enable use are dangerous and ineffective for drug treatment. Yelling grow up at the end of a post may also not be helping make your point.
