In April 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that students with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly take the National Eligibility Test (NET) https://ugcnet.nta.nic.in/. This is a significant change as previously, a master’s degree was required. Here’s a breakdown of the new policy: Students with four-year bachelor’s degrees (eight semesters) can appear for the NET exam. They can appear for the NET in a subject different from their undergraduate major. To be eligible for a PhD with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), students need a minimum of 75% marks in their undergraduate course. This new policy is expected to streamline the process for students interested in pursuing research careers. #UGC #NET #PhD #Research #HigherEducation #Students #4YearDegree #NewPolicy #opportunities

Exciting news for PhD aspirants! The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that starting from the academic year 2024-2025, candidates can use their National Eligibility Test (NET) score for PhD admissions. This means that students will no longer have to give multiple entrance exams for admissions to different universities. The UGC's decision to replace university-specific entrance tests with the NET score will not only reduce the burden on students but also streamline the admission process. It will ensure that candidates are selected based on a unified criterion, making the process more transparent and efficient. This move will help students save time, effort, and money while also providing them with equal opportunities to pursue their academic goals. Hope that this initiative will encourage more students to pursue their PhD dreams and contribute to the growth of the nation. #PhDadmissions #UGC #NETscore #education #academia

This almost goes without saying, but another thing you need to do, at least in economics, is develop some clear research interests. That's a very important factor in deciding which schools will be best for you. For example, my main field of interest is health. The schools I was most excited about applying to and possibly attending are ones with at least a few well established health economists on their faculty. How to develop research interests? At a minimum, by reading lots of papers, starting with topics in the Journal of Economic Perspectives that sound interesting to you. The rest will happen pretty naturally.

Some of the lower-ranking universities in the US are extremely unethical in their practices. I've read far too many horror stories of those universities targeting students from underrepresented groups by giving them a false sense of what a graduate degree can do for them. Unless the university is in the top 30% of the national university ranking, they shouldn't be allowed to take federal loans. St. Leo is a private "national" university that is essentially selling their PhD degrees to uninformed students. It ranks at the bottom of the ranking and there is no way anyone getting a PhD in that school will have a legitimate chance of getting a good-paying job due to the poor preparation they received. For those of you considering a PhD program, keep these two points in mind: 1. If you're not good enough to get into a PhD program for free (either offered an RA, TA, or outright fellowship), you shouldn't get a PhD. 2. If the school doesn't have the money to support all PhD students, you should never consider that school. #academic #integrity #phdprogram #graduatestudies #phd
