Internship Highlight: Andres M. completed a Summer 2023 internship with the Blue Origin as a Materials & Process Engineer intern. Here are some of his insights: "This experience has reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career in the aerospace industry and has given me glimpses into exciting possibilities that I may pursue with my degree. Being exposed to high-level meetings and conversations has shown me how I may transfer that type of professionalism into the classroom. The most rewarding aspect was the chance to see directly how the skills I acquired at UTEP were put to use has been the most rewarding part. It has been really motivating to watch fascinating ideas from my studies come to life in the design, development, and testing of aerospace technologies." TIPS FOR YOU: Some advice I would give other students considering an internship includes: 1. Embrace curiosity 🤔: Approach the opportunity with an open mind and willingness to learn new applications outside the university. Be proactive in seeking the opportunity to participate in various projects, teams, and technologies. 2. Flexibility 🕺: Understand that the aerospace industry is constantly changing, so being able to adapt and be flexible under unexpected situations is a valuable skill. 3. Network🤝: Establishing meaningful connections is a vital part of an internship. There is going to be numerous opportunities to meet with other professionals in your field, so being able to build conversations of common interests is important. Every day, our interns experience the power of our decentralized, entrepreneurial culture through their division experiences and the opportunity to participate with our employee resource groups. Sriya Garde, an electrical and computer engineering master’s student at the University of Colorado Boulder and an electrical engineering intern at ITW Food Machines wanted an internship that trusted her to be involved in real work. Through her internship, she has experienced ITW’s entrepreneurial culture through being empowered to engage in the product development process. Q: Why did you choose to intern at ITW? A: I sought an internship where I could engage in product development, from ideation to implementation and manufacturing. During my interview, I learned I would be working on new features for Hobart Mixers and Slicers, which excited me about interning here. Additionally, ITW’s reputation as a Fortune 200 company known for engineering reliable, safe, and durable systems made me eager to be part of its culture. Q: What has been your most enjoyable intern experience this summer? A: While I’ve enjoyed working on innovative projects and collaborating with incredible people at FEG, my top experience has been being a part of the Young Professionals Network (YPN). The events and initiatives organized by YPN are not only fun but also provide excellent networking opportunities with other young professionals at various stages in their ITW careers. This involvement has made me feel connected to a larger community and aligned with those on a similar journey. Q: What has been one of your biggest takeaways from your internship so far? A: The biggest takeaway has been hands-on experience with product development, particularly from an embedded perspective. Working from the ground up on a new feature for a product has been a valuable learning experience. This role has allowed me to explore, implement, and learn from my ideas, giving me a deep understanding of how systems work and the intricacies of the new product development lifecycle. I have gained critical skills and knowledge that are invaluable in understanding the practical applications of my coursework. #ProudToBeITW

Got Questions, Ask Lex! Q: How you can gain real-world problem-solving experience through internships in a specific industry. A: In my experience, I am blessed enough to get an internship opportunity 12 years ago that is heavily aligned with my degree which is Industrial Engineering and as IE intern. I have to highlight this because IE is a really versatile degree. The most important part to gain real world problem solving skill in your specific industry is to be intentional in applying for the job or role. Don't apply for the sake of completion. This is the start of you developing your career. So getting a role that you really want, say as a problem solver in a manufacturing industry as your internship will definitely help you to land your first actual job. Interned at PI industries Ltd has given me a glimpse of how the real industry works. The internship started in a way, in which I realized from day one, it was all about learning things that were not in the engineering books. Honestly, the kick off felt intimidating, with all the expectations and not knowing what was anticipated from me.
