Marketing Communications Manager @ Churchill Education | Freelance Writer & Editor | Telling Human Stories
I really enjoyed chatting with Investigator, Chris Smith, about why and how he pulled off a midlife career change. His ‘WHY’ is encapsulattd in my fave quote of the story: “Jobs come and go and one day you retire, but your family is always going to be there. You’ve got to ask yourself, is your job more important than time with your family?” And ‘HOW’? Well first there is having the 🍒’s to make the leap. Because the reality is, changing industries is going to take you out of your comfort zone and generally mean an initial paycut. So there’s the process of weighing the pros and cons. Then there’s action, which often also takes persistence. “I applied for around 20 jobs and wasn’t successful in getting any of them,“ he said. So what ultimately got him over the line? GAMECHANGER: He turned his policing career into qualifications though the process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). “The first job I applied for with my new qualifications (5 Diplomas!), I got!” 🔥 If you’re in a career rut, feeling like you’re stuck in a job that doesn’t float your boat anymore, have a read of Chris’s story, and share it along to anyone else who might need a nudge of encouragement. The Late University: How to Talk about Your Experience at a Closed College Dozens of colleges, most of them small, private schools, closed their doors in the last year. An increasing number of higher education professionals will have to explain job history at shuttered institutions. We have three tips for effectively discussing your work experience: (https://bit.ly/3XebP9T) Be honest. Don’t dance around the issue. Keep your comments brief and candid. That said, it’s not necessary to dwell on the closure or entertain voyeuristic questions. A simple statement such as “It was a difficult season at Main Street College that led to its closure—and for all of us who were invested in its legacy,” will do. Stay positive. An interview is no place for blame or bellyaching. Express your gratitude for the colleagues you work with and the lessons you learned at the school. Share the ways you grew as a professional through your time at the closed college. Connect mission. Show the continuity of the mission and values of your former institution and the college or university with which you are interviewing. Draw out the ways your former experience can strengthen the work their organization is already doing.
