Reflecting on the first 4 months of 2024 and looking to see what my colleagues in other businesses are doing I am led to wonder what we all get from the conferences, symposiums and gatherings we attend. Much as we are pleased to share where we have been and what we have attended I don’t see any learnings or takeaways. This poses the question do we know it all? Are the messages given just talking to the converted, or is this just a way of us looking busy in a place where we are comfortable but at the risk of not driving business growth? Last week three colleagues and I arranged one focused day of meeting clients face to face, discussing their projects, plans, and market views. We walked away with a clear understanding of our clients, their businesses and agreed next steps forward in helping them achieve their goals and hopefully Lysander increase our pipeline.

PEOPLE /// They are the key reason we attend events, do you agree? Content is important as is the experience but being able to catch up with colleagues and friends across the globe and meet new people is why we attend an in person conference. Atomicon is a conference that has a virtual or in person ticket for the same cost and both options get access to the recordings so you don’t miss a thing when there are 4 streams to choose from! If I was there for the content I could easily just watch from my bed anywhere! But for me it’s about the real connection which happens over lunch, over drinks and while having glitter painted on your face! I met some incredible people who encouraged me to launch my club (coming soon), and was able to share ideas and encourage others. And nothing beats a hug, especially from the Atomicon founders Andrew Pickering and Pete Gartland, the nicest guys in sales and marketing. Oh and maybe the food and goodies are another bonus. PSA ‼️ If you are leading a conference breakout, webinar, or other event where you’ve indicated your topic will be how to XYZ, please describe, discuss and share how to XYZ. ❌ Do NOT spend the bulk of your time gatekeeping and pitching. 💎 The irony is that when you share in glorious detail how to XYZ, a number of us realize how much help we need. There’s no way we want to attempt to execute these black diamonds on our own. We are more interested in learning how you can help us. ⛔️ In contrast, when you gatekeep and pitch too heavily, it’s a turnoff. An hour talk that delivers less than 5 minutes of valuable content is a giant missed opportunity to educate, enlighten, and grow your business.
