It was the hardest, but best decision I ever made. After advising on a complex M&A deal as a lawyer, the client asked, “Have you ever thought about coming over to the business side?” My response? “Only every single day since I graduated from law school.” I didn’t make this decision lightly. Joining Merrill Lynch’s M&A group after practicing law for 4 years meant I was essentially starting over as a junior associate and would be years older than my peers in the bullpen. I knew I was taking a hit, but it was also an investment in my future. And the rest is history. Transitioning from Merrill, I went on to roles at BlackRock and Apollo, ultimately leading to my current position as Managing Partner & Chief Investment Officer at Andalusian Credit Partners. Joining Andalusian has led me to reflect on my career, particularly the pivotal moment when I transitioned from law to banking. Looking back now it’s clear that sometimes in your career, you have to know when to take a step backward to move forward.
