Digging Deep into the Why | Leaders| Clinicians | Parents |Children | Patient Care Journey| Optimal Health outcomes
I am sure you saw the Pigg O Stat device trending on social media this week! As a pediatric nurse for over 30 years, I have never seen this device used on a child and hope I never will! I can't help but draw a comparison between this and Papoose boards. Papoose boards were widely used and accepted before being banned in the UK and some states in the US, and discontinued in most pediatric health care settings due to ethical implications. How is the Pigg O Stat any different? Both are forms of restraint to stop a child from moving for their protection. And both are restraining a young child without their consent, increasing a child's level of distress and emotional trauma leading to an increased risk of developing PTSD and/or PMTS (Pediatric Medical Traumatic Stress). When we are protecting a child and looking out for their safety, the whole child needs to be considered - mind, body, and spirit. There are so many approaches available to help children stay still during procedures and imaging. Child life specialists, parent presence, preparation/education, parent comfort holds, distraction, calming stimulation, incentive support, etc! Health care providers, we need to do better! How are you ensuring the physical AND emotional safety of the children you treat? #PiggOStat #PapooseBoards #ChildRestraints #ImmobilizationDevices #Pediatrics #Pediatricians #RadiologyTechnicians #Xrays #MentalHealthIsHealth #LetsDoBetter #MentalHealthMatters #KidsMatterToo References: The Journal of Urgent Care Medicine, AdventHealth, Journal of Medicine Imagining and Radiation Sciences

Pediatricians, you're not just healers for your patients - you can be champions for change, too. Your influence within healthcare institutions and private practices can be the catalyst for more equitable child life services. As pediatricians, you're often the first point of contact for families navigating the complexities of healthcare. You have the power to advocate for resources that can make a significant difference in a child's healthcare experience. One of those invaluable resources is child life services. Your voice can turn the tide in favor of families who desperately need and deserve access to these services. When pediatricians speak, people listen. By advocating for more equitable child life services, you can help ensure that families receive the emotional and educational support they need. This isn't just about medical care; it's about the psychosocial and emotional well being of the child and family. Your advocacy can be the missing piece that brings about real change. That's why we're excited to announce that we'll be attending the American Academy of Pediatrics Conference in Washington, D.C. next week. We believe that by joining forces, we can amplify the call for better child life services. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of countless families. We can't wait to meet you next week to share how an investment in child life resources for your patients and families can make a lasting impact. Join us at the American Academy of Pediatrics Conference Booth 725 to learn more about how you can be an advocate for equitable child life services. #patientexperience #whatreallymatters #digitalhealth #childrenshospital #womenintech #childlifespecialist #childlifeservices #parenting #b2b2c #valuebasedcare #pediatrics #aap2024

SVP of Strategic Marketing & Partnerships | Leader in Behavioral Healthcare & Tech | Driving Growth with High-Performance Teams
There are options for mental health care when outpatient therapy is not enough. When I worked in education, I wish I would have known about PHP and IOP programs for students and families in need. These programs, sometimes referred to as day programs, offer more intensive levels of care and can prevent the escalation of mental health symptoms long before the need for a visit to the ER or inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Quick access to high-quality PHP and IOP transforms lives, reduces the cost on the healthcare system, and helps to narrow the gap on the worsening condition of mental health in children outlined in the article below. There are immediate solutions to get help and feel better. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gTb9mdap. Compass Health Center #mentalhealth #psychiatry #therapyworks
NBC News recently called attention to a critical call to action from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Emergency Nurses Association. They're raising awareness of worsening mental health conditions in children nationwide – “Every year, approximately half a million children with mental health and behavioral health conditions are evaluated in emergency departments for psychiatric emergencies, and those numbers have increased over the past decade.” Join us in amplifying this important conversation. We are facing a mental health crisis in our pediatric populations nationwide. Almost half a million children each year are seeking behavioral health care in emergency departments, due to limited community resources and provider shortages. While staffing shortages and resource limitations are not unique to pediatrics, emphasizing primary care as an entry point to children receiving mental health care services will help alleviate the burden on emergency departments which are not necessarily equipped to handle these issues. Ultimately, we need better collaboration between schools, primary care physicians, community resources, and mental health providers to address this burgeoning issue. New recommendations from American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Emergency Physicians, and Emergency Nurses Association include: 🗒 Implementing better referral protocols to appropriate mental health services 🚑 Leveraging mental health mobile crisis teams for emergencies in community settings 👩⚕️ 👨⚕️Training ED staff to recognize and care for children in mental health crisis 💵 Increasing funding to train and pay new mental health specialists #mentalhealthsupport #pediatrics #HealthcareonLinkedIn

#OTMONTH "Being at AOTA conference was a rewarding experience. I was able to connect with all areas of OT's expansive scope- from hand therapy, pediatrics, to community health. The conference reminded me of OT's unique role in helping the community, and I am excited to apply what I have learned in my practice." "My personal take-away from the conference was the annual Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecture: "Bubble Wrap is for paper, not people". If we don't allow our patients to take risks and explore, and if we protect and guard them from everything, they won't reach their full potential. Allowing for safe risk provides the patient with respect, autonomy, and room to grow and make mistakes. By saying "you can't", we are essentially saying "you're not capable". -Kelsey Falon, OTR/L ✨Kelsey, you summed up this experience perfectly! 🌟 The Power of Knowledge Sharing in Pediatric Healthcare 🌟 As a pediatrician, I've always believed that one of the most powerful tools we have is the ability to share knowledge and experiences within our medical community. Every day, I see firsthand how collaboration and learning from one another can positively impact patient care and outcomes. In our field, no one person has all the answers. By sharing insights, best practices, and the latest research findings, we empower ourselves and our colleagues to provide the best possible care for our young patients. From discussing complex cases to staying updated on the latest treatment modalities, knowledge sharing not only enhances our clinical skills but also fosters a sense of community and support among healthcare professionals. I encourage my fellow pediatricians and healthcare providers to join me in embracing the culture of continuous learning and collaboration. Together, let's harness the power of shared knowledge to make a difference in the lives of the children and families we serve. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this topic. How has knowledge sharing impacted your practice? Let's continue the conversation in the comments below! 👩⚕️👨⚕️💬 #Pediatrics #Healthcare #KnowledgeSharing #Community

🩺 Providers and patient advocates are seeking $758 million from Congress to support the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program. The American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, Academic Pediatric Association, and Children’s Hospital Association were among the over two dozen industry groups to pen a May 16 letter to Congressional leaders asking for more CHGME program funding. The groups say the program “is the most important federal investment supporting the pediatric physician workforce and access to care for the nation’s children.” Congress allocated $390 million to the CHGME program in the 2024 fiscal year (FY), the highest amount to date for the program. However, the groups stated that additional funding for FY 2025 fiscal year is necessary to address the “ongoing youth mental health crisis.” 🌟👶 #HealthcareHeroes #PediatricCare #MedicalTraining #SupportOurDoctors #ChildrensHospitals #GMEFunding #FutureDoctors #HealthcareFunding #Pediatrics #MedicalEducation #HealthcareSupport #MedicalCommunity #HospitalSupport
