Over the weekend, as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, I was able to attend Morehouse School of Medicine award and celebration dinner for the graduating students and staff. I was in awe of the growth of the students. As you know it takes dedication, strength and and unwavering commitment and dedication to get to the finish line. It is the same way we may not always see the finish product but knowing that we are making a meaningful contribution is enough. 🎓👩⚕️ Health & Medicine's Chicago AHEC and Workforce Programs Director Ronisha Edwards-Elliot highlighted the impact of race-blind college admissions on minority health at the recent Illinois Minority Health Conference at Illinois State University! 🚫🎓 This year's theme, “Achieving a Health Illinois by Eliminating Health Disparities,” brought together a diverse group of health professionals, students, and community partners. 🤝💡 Edwards-Elliot's poster, “Impact of Race Blind College Admissions on Minority Community Health,” explored the June 2023 Supreme Court ruling and its implications for underrepresented groups. It is about time we change the stigmatism around #NursingHomes and what it looks like to #AgeInACommunity. I wish someone had prepared me for the harsh truth about getting a PhD in Rehabilitation Science sooner. Reflecting on a recent conversation with a new PhD graduate in Rehabilitation Science, I couldn't help but feel disheartened by her words: "We pour our hearts and souls into our studies, and for what?" It's disheartening to perceive a lack of societal value placed on PhDs in Rehabilitation compared to other programs. This perception translates into fewer job opportunities and lower salaries 😔, despite the undeniable demand for rehabilitation professionals. This challenge triples when you are an international student like me and her. Yet, the reality is that everyone, at some point in their lives, may need the expertise of a rehabilitation professional. For some, it's a necessity for daily living. The demand for these services surpasses that of many other professions. Despite this, there seems to be a gap between the demand for rehabilitation services and the recognition and compensation that should accompany a PhD in the field. It's time we address this discrepancy and advocate for the recognition and opportunities that match the significance of the work we do in rehabilitation science. Most trends in #healthcare I find alarming (in a bad way). This is not one of those. This is one to celebrate 🙌🏽 . More and more medical schools are finding ways to make medical school free or more affordable see NYU Grossman School of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine , and now Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. This is a very positive trend. Let's keep it going. By while we are at it. Does medical school REALLY need to be 4 years? Why not just 3 years? It sure seems like the 4th year in medical school for many is one in which necessary and useful education/training is not always provided, but still remains costly. If there remains a 4th year, how about a focus on business management, advocacy, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, development of a growth mindset....? #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter
