We are delighted to share this reflection from exalt CEO Gisele Castro: "I am always asking myself and my team, 'How do we create the conditions for our young people to thrive in a changing workforce?' Thank you to the America Forward Coalition, author Tatum Burnett, and Daniel López, for asking me to share some of my answers in this excellent piece about the exalt model. With national elections right around the corner, we all should be thinking about how Federal policies and priorities, like the reauthorization of WOIA and beyond, are supportive of and responsive to those of us most proximate to the challenge." #WorkforceDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment #SocialJustice

You know you're in for a delight, when the speaker is referred to, by her three-time Pulitzer Prize winning father, as the "better Friedman." I've been trying to truly assimilate the concept of "agency" and Orly Friedman not only articulated it beautifully, but is enabling K-12 school going children to develop it. - Do you have a goal for what you want to accomplish? - Can you make a plan for how to spend your time and follow through with it? - Can you focus on it in a room full of peers and access to the internet? Sounds familiar? These are some of the skills they help students develop to set them up for success in the modern workplace. Are work habits the key to equality of opportunity? Here's her talk from Synapse Conclave this weekend: https://lnkd.in/gED7suVK

Together, the National Youth Employment Coalition and Love146 are working to address the barriers to employment and education that exist for survivors of trafficking and provide ways to better prepare workforce development programs to address the unique needs of this population. We have developed a joint statement discussing employment and education services as an investment in the future of youth who have experienced trafficking and strategies for these services to best serve the young people impacted. Love146 is an NYEC member that seeks to end child trafficking and exploitation. This work is achieved through relationships and collaboration, scaling proven practices, and challenging the systems that leave children vulnerable. Read the article: https://lnkd.in/g_vwsmiU "In order to be successful in supporting this population, educational and workforce development programs must be trauma-informed and trained to recognize and respond to the unique challenges and needs of this population."

I love this post by the Annie E. Casey Foundation with 5 actionable youth engagement strategies. Program planning can be so much more aligned with impact for youth by simply including them. For ex. 🔵Involving youth: make sure “they contribute consistently and meaningfully throughout the process.” #impactinglives #schoolbasedprograms #youthvoice #youthengagement
President and CEO, The Annie E. Casey Foundation | Board Director | Strategist | Social Innovator | Thought Leader
When Casey launched its Thrive By 25 effort in 2021 focused on improving outcomes for youth and young adults, one of the first things we did was think about how to strengthen youth engagement within the Foundation, with our grantees and partners and public systems. It has been a wonderful learning journey for all of us. In this blog post we share some of science behind what makes youth engagement so important for young people, how it makes our work better, and the range of strategies that can be used to do this work since one size does not fit all. We look forward to hearing how others are engaging young people in their work and preparing the adults in their lives for this critical developmental opportunity. https://lnkd.in/ektTHAPc

“Disconnected youth are often not out of work or school by choice. Survey data showed that more than half of opportunity youth were actively looking for full-time work. Moreover, a nearly equal portion said they “do not have enough work experience to get the kind of job they want” or that they faced other challenges, ranging from family responsibilities and transportation difficulties to not knowing how to interview or to prepare a resume.” Check out the article: https://lnkd.in/erWDCBXV as it discusses the critical role of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) in providing essential services to vulnerable youth. Learn about the need for additional investment to enhance the program’s effectiveness in bridging racial income and poverty gaps. Our Illinois Youth Investment Program helps bridge those gaps by offering job readiness training to our youth clients.

🌌 Are we truly embracing diversity and inclusion in all areas of our lives? 🤔 The current Google trends are shedding light on the diversity concerns within Mayor Johnson's inner circle. A recent analysis by the Chicago Sun-Times has revealed an underrepresentation of Latinos and Asian Americans among the Mayor's closest advisors. This disparity has prompted the Latino Caucus and the Asian American Caucus of the City Council to advocate for better inclusivity and representation reflective of Chicago's diverse demographics. Mayor Johnson's office has responded, emphasizing the commitment to appointing individuals capable of executing the work efficiently while echoing the importance of aligning with the city's population mix. But, data indicates a shift in the overall workforce demographic over the years, with Mayor Johnson's administration showcasing more diversity compared to predecessors. Additionally, the news report provides updates on various topics, including the confirmation of two measles cases in Chicago, with one involving a child at a Pilsen shelter for migrants. The Chicago Department of Public Health is evaluating the residents' vaccination status to manage the spread effectively. Moreover, the legislative approval of an elected school board in Chicago, pending Governor JB Pritzker's signature, signifies a significant step towards democratizing the educational leadership structure. The proposal outlines a phased approach, with voters electing 10 board members initially and the Mayor appointing the remainder, highlighting efforts to enhance community involvement and democratic practices within the city's educational governance. Diversity and inclusion matter at every level. So, what steps can we take to ensure equal representation in our communities and workplaces? 💭 Together, let's empower ourselves and others to embrace diversity and strive for inclusion in all areas of our lives! A new research project, the City Year Alumni Bridging Study, explores how a year of service with AmeriCorps prepares young people with critical workforce, civic and interpersonal skills that can help them thrive professionally and shape their futures as community members and engaged citizens. Here are some highlights: Drawing from survey responses and interviews of over 2,000 City Year AmeriCorps alumni who served between 2012-2022, the City Year Alumni Bridging Study highlights three major themes: ** Serving as a City Year AmeriCorps member enhances a young person’s commitment to service long term. ** The AmeriCorps experience builds alumni capacity to “work across lines of difference,” meaning how they navigate working effectively and collaboratively with diverse teams in the workplace. ** A service year expands key interpersonal and social-emotional skills that are most in demand by employers—and arguably most needed in American civic life today. Many thanks to our colleagues at Cornell University and for the support from Einhorn Collaborative for their partnership on this study. https://lnkd.in/etsGk39N

Early Diversion: Changing Futures, One Step at a Time At FACESS, we believe that early diversion is the key to breaking the cycle of risk and empowering our youth to make positive choices. By focusing on early intervention, we aim to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth with culturally appropriate support that not only prevents contact with the youth justice system but also fosters their strengths, talents, and aspirations. Our early diversion programs are designed to reach young people before they find themselves on a path that can limit their potential. Through mentoring, life skills development, cultural engagement, and family support, we create a safe environment for youth to grow, learn, and connect with their culture and community. We recognise the importance of supporting our families as well, ensuring that they have the tools and support to guide their youth on a positive path. With your support, we can continue to provide these crucial services and help shape a brighter future for our youth - one where they thrive, contribute to their communities, and live with pride in their cultural identity. By investing in early diversion, you're not only helping a young person today but also uplifting an entire community for generations to come. Join us in making a difference. Fund early diversion and be part of creating lasting change for our youth, families, and communities. #FACESS #EarlyDiversion #EmpoweringYouth #SupportingFamilies #CulturalStrength
