On this National Disability Independence Day, we're honored to share the story of Dan and his family. Dan lives with his caregiver and uncle, Bruce, and his guardian and aunt, Kerry. The family's relationship with Careforth began 16 years ago. "Knowing someone is there to assist if needed gives us immense comfort." Over the last decade and a half, Careforth has been able to support Dan, Bruce, and Kerry with everything from emotional support to educational assistance. Jessica and Lindsay, dedicated members of Dan's care team, have helped create a foundation of independence and positivity as Dan continues to thrive and set new goals. The future of disability support brings challenges and opportunities, from the need to boost profit margins to demands for a more person-centered and community-orientated approach. The future of disability support is a positive one. It is more empowering, intersectional, and comprehensive. We will see more people with disability receive the support they need as their voices and experiences are listened to! But, it requires us to continue to advocate and have our voices heard "MAYDAY MAYDAY DON'T DELAY". Advocate to stop the rate increase delay. The presence of as many people as possible is critical to having our voices heard. #APositiveFuturefortheDisabilitySupport

Supported Decision Making is about giving people with disability the information and help they need to make their own choices. As the parent of a young person with disability, you're probably already helping them with everyday decisions such as what to wear or eat. But as your child grows up, the decisions become bigger and may involve where to live, medical choices, goal setting, or relationships. ACD is hosting a FREE webinar on Supported Decision Making, presented by Margaret Duncan, Principal Lawyer at Duncan.Legal. Margaret is an expert in guiding parents and carers of children with disability through this process. Dan Stubbs, the Victorian Disability Worker Commissioner (VDWC) will join us at the start of the webinar to talk about how the #VDWC helps the disability workforce to promote supported decision-making. The session is on Thursday 5th September at 7.00 pm and runs for two hours. Duncan.Legal webinars book up quickly, so don't miss out - book your spot today 👇 https://bit.ly/SDM_24FB #SupportedDecisionMaking #DisabilitySupport #ParentingJourney #DisabilityRights #DisabilityCommunity #Empowerment

Disability Speaker & Advocate | Accessibility Educator, Coach & Strategist | Making Accessibility EASY!
I LOVE this post by Charlie Kramer, a disability life coach who passionately embraces his own disability. Here's his message: "So often in life, we silence ourselves to avoid making someone else feel uncomfortable or inconvenienced... Pardon my French, but F*CK that. You deserve to be heard. You deserve to live your life to its fullest and do EVERYTHING you are able to do. In fact, you don’t just deserve it, you are entitled to it; every human being is. 🙌 By stepping up and speaking out, you’re not only standing up for yourself, but you’re helping to end this pattern for future disabled people that this individual may encounter. Drop a 👏 if you are committed to speaking up for yourself and others!" ID: A white background with black text that reads: Part of accepting your disability means not masking your needs for the comfort of others. . . . . #DisabledAndProud #DisabilityAwareness #DeafBlind #AccessibilityForAll #InclusionRevolution

To me, disability pride means not hiding who you are. You should be able to exist without shame, advocate for your needs without fear, and be your whole, beautiful, messy self. What does disability pride mean to you?
