Most cats can–and should–learn how to do a few simple tricks. Some, such as coming when called, are useful, and others, such as giving a high five, are a fun form of enrichment for your cat. Teaching and doing tricks with your cat deepens the bond between you. Cats enjoy spending time with their people, and it won’t take long before both of you are looking forward to your sessions. You may not realize it, but your cat is already trained in several ways. Chances are you have a routine at mealtimes, one your cat knows and perhaps helped you develop. You may have already established other routines, like playing before bedtime, or afternoon snacks that your cat visibly anticipates. It's time for #PagesForPups 🐾📚🐶 Many of our therapy teams visit libraries, schools or are invited to read aloud to a group of children through our Paws to Read program. Many times, we are asked about recommendations for children’s books that feature dogs, and boy, are there some great ones out there! Each month, Paws & Think’s Youth- Services Coordinator, Shannon Gaughan- Kelly, is going to share her recommendation of a dog-themed children’s book. You may want to add it to your library/school bag, check it out at the library, or perhaps buy a good dog-themed book for a child in your life. This month’s book is a little different than past recommendations. Not all children are motivated by fiction, so it is a good idea to have one or two non-fiction selections in your bag. National Geographic’s ‘Everything Dogs’ is a great non-fiction resource! It is filled with a lot of great photos of dogs that will grab the attention of the young reader immediately. The book is full of information about dogs from how to care for them, popular breeds, rescue dogs, performance dogs, dogs with jobs, their history and more. Much of the information can be found in short paragraphs so it is easy for a reader to read without getting overwhelmed. If a struggling reader is getting tired, you can read one of the shorter fact paragraphs and have a discussion, possibly relating what they’ve learned to your dog. For more fluent readers, you can read several of the paragraphs on a page and find pages with more text that go more in depth about the topics. This is also a great book to help teach kids more about dogs and to advocate for responsible interactions with our canine companions. This would not be a read aloud book but rather a great book to help build a connection between you, your dog and your reader. You might learn a new fun fact too! In addition to this book, the National Geographic for Kids series has many titles to choose from for many different reading levels. There are beginner level books about dogs as well as more fun resource books that will appeal to kids who enjoy non-fiction books or want to learn more about amazing dogs! 💙💛 #everypersoneverydog #PagesForPups
