Moreover, research reveals that CBDOs serving communities of color face similar negative effects from prevailing narratives as the residents themselves. Philanthropy plays to improve the health and wellbeing of Bristol and West of England communities. Each year Quartet Community Foundation publish a report on local needs and explore the most pressing issues facing communities across the West of England. In View https://lnkd.in/e_vQtY6b shares the research used to guide grant making, shines a light on some of the amazing organisations funded through Quartet, and highlights the increasingly important work taking place to address local needs. This week, I had the opportunity to meet a family that has created a fund managed by the Quartet to learn more about the valuable and important work it enables. In the last 2 years, thanks to fund holders, more than £4m in funding has been distributed to improve community health and wellbeing in the West of England. We're shifting how we show up as a funder. We're no longer searching for bright ideas from other communities to implement. Instead, we're starting with listening to communities in our region working on their own solutions and then working alongside them to build community power and agency. The approach is rooted in community and backed by the experience of other philanthropic funds. Community impact and engagement are at the core of driving positive changes. Enhancing economic development, improving education and healthcare, promoting inclusivity, and supporting charitable causes all contribute significantly to making a difference. Engaging the community empowers citizens, ensures meaningful project impacts, and fosters innovation through diverse perspectives, nurturing a sense of belonging, support, and resilience. Removing barriers of mistrust by asking simple questions like "How can we help?" is key to successful community outreach. Advocating for inclusivity ensures equitable access to resources, especially in community health programs. Data on outcomes is fundamental to understanding the impact of partnerships on the communities and to evaluate tangible and intangible benefits, strengthening community bonds. Gathering qualitative and quantitative data provides stories that showcase genuine attempts at inclusion. Rural schools need our support now more than ever, no matter the the classification be it public, private, independent, or therapeutic. This is especially true I've found in #Vermont. Schools like Compass School VT (https://lnkd.in/eGjfHzVB) in Westminster serve a range of students and communities in southern and southeast parts of this state and neighboring #NewHampshire, and being entirely funded by tuition and town-pay is putting our mission at risk despite the clear need for our talented teachers and student-centered approach to education. “We're at a time when the value of nongovernmental leadership stepping into spaces and demonstrating where progress is possible is going to be incredibly important. There is a lot of incredible work to be done by nongovernmental institutions who want to lead in areas that actually bring people closer together and strengthen communities by narrowing the gaps that exist.” - Daniel Smith (see link for more) As a #CompassVT parent and board member, I see the challenges in providing an enriching learning environment of this one small #ruralschool as representative to all the school classifications found across this state, and while we choose as a school to shine our light more on the success stories of our students, of which there are many, than the challenges I nonetheless feel we're peering in the window from the outside to philanthropic interest and investment. To me, for the programs like VT's Free Degree Promise to be successful the state first must provide each learner an equally free promise to the K12 education that fits to their learning style and modality, setting aside geography and enable town-pay options for all communities equally. Schools of all types indeed are the heartbeat of rural places, and they will provide the workforce and the innovations for the decades that follow, but they need our support in time, talent, and in treasure too.
