The worst advice to give a private practice therapist is to "charge your worth". When you're therapist turned small business owner... ❌Trained to prioritize the bottom-line over your values, even when you're off the clock. ❌Advised to erase your backstory, aka tabula rasa, for the benefit of "the work" while also managing transference & countertransference. 𝘛𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘺𝘮𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴. ❌Forced to provide therapeutic services in unsafe & under resourced environments, and ❌ Overworked & underpaid, while enduring years of extreme employee exploitation, Would this ⬆️ make you feel worthy or worthless? When you're shown that you're unworthy, imposter syndrome will take over, & you'll never charge enough. So, instead, I encourage you to charge what you need. Charge what you need to give high quality care to clients. Charge what you need to build a sustainable business. Charge what you need to thrive beyond the session. Why? Because you're worth it 😘 🔄 Share with a fellow private practice owner who is worthy enough to have their needs met. PS Every private practice owner is worthy of getting their needs met. ❤️
Thank you. I had to work through my own limiting core beliefs about money and my needs in order to place a fee that is right for me.
I really love how you changed the narrative with this. It makes me think as I am starting back in the field again while expanding my services. Thank you for this :-)
I love this!
Thanks for the reminder! Changing my narrative to "charge what I need", thank you!

9moAmen to charging an hourly rate that meets your needs. You can’t put a price tag on “your worth.” Even so, too many mental health establishments take advantage of therapists and wear us down. I love your advice in your podcast episode about networking with people who value you and don’t judge you by your hourly rate.
