"A culture of caring". Some of you may have seen my recent post about lessons learned from being a family member accompanying a loved one through a critical medical journey and how those lessons might/should be applied to senior living. As my sister's healing journey continues, I was leaving her rehab venue last evening and had another epiphany. I realized, throughout this experience that we, as loved ones of injured people, become instantly bonded by our experiences. Nods of understanding, compassionate greetings, spontaneous conversations, conveyances of well wishes, have become the norm during my visits for the last 2 1/2 months. After another visitor and I exchanged "have a good evening and get some rest" with one another, the words, "culture of caring" popped into my head. This culture seems to happen spontaneously, and it occurred to me that similar interactions are likely happening daily in elder living communities as well. It made me wonder what we can do in our mission to better support it? Yes, many of us hold support groups for families, but can we do more? Perhaps defined family refreshment, nutritious snack, and discussion areas? Readily available resource and informational hubs? Family member nametags for those who wish them, so that the nods can become more personal interactions? What have you done in your communities to stimulate and strengthen the bonds of this culture of caring? #familymission #cultureofcaring

Isolation is a significant issue that we see across our industry, and for many of us it can be difficult to fully understand how challenging this can be for our parents / grandparents, or friends. Engaging in meaningful and authentic conversations with people can provide valuable insights and strengthen relationships, regardless of their age or life circumstances. At Homewatch CareGivers, we work with and train our caregivers on active listening, eye contact, silence, and open ended questions. Here are a list of some of the most common questions to ask seniors. - What was your childhood like? - What are some of your fondest memories? - How did you meet your spouse or best friend? - What were some of the biggest challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? - What are some of the most significant changes you've seen in your lifetime? - What accomplishments are you most proud of? - What advice would you give to younger generations? - What were your favorite hobbies or activities when you were younger? - What traditions or customs were important in your family? - What are some lessons you've learned about life and happiness? While the questions are important and can serve as a starting point, the caregivers presence, active listening, and eye contact are more important than the questions. We all know when we feel heard, and we all know when its a box checking exercise. Homewatch CareGivers will be here when you / your loved ones need quality in home care. https://lnkd.in/ewwg-xv3

Happy National Self-Care Day! In a stressful and hurting world, it is even more important to practice actionable self-care activities. This can be true not only for hurting individuals but for those providing care to those individuals. We cannot provide essential care to others if we cannot take take care of ourselves. This is because self-care is not self-focused but people-focused.
