📈✈️ African airlines achieved six consecutive months of passenger demand growth in June 2024! According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), continental carriers saw a 16.2% year-on-year increase in revenue passenger-kilometres (RPK) and a passenger load factor of 77.1%, the highest improvement among all regions. According to The International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air cargo demand in March 2024 increased by 10.3% compared to March 2023, and international operations saw an 11.4% increase. Available cargo capacity increased by 7.3%, with Middle Eastern airlines experiencing the most substantial demand growth at 19.9%. African airlines also performed well, with a 14.2% increase in demand. 2024 is definitely the year of recovery for aviation. Airlines operations have exceeded pre-Covid level both in terms of capacity and traffic carried. The number of seats offered in the region increased by 12.6%, from 14.3 million in March 2019 to 16.1 million in March 2024, thanks to new routes and frequencies added. Over the same period, ASKs also exceeded the level of March 2019 by 7.7%. African carriers accounted for 49.5% of the international capacity and 35.9% of the intercontinental capacity. African Airlines Association (AFRAA) estimates that passenger traffic carried by African operators in 2024 will be about 98 million. In terms of capacity split between African and non-African operators on both regional and intercontinental routes, AFRAA estimate a 50.7% and 49.3% respectively. A further disaggregation of capacity on only the intercontinental routes reveals a much lower share of 35.7% for Africa as against 64.3% for non-African operators. What's important now is to sustain the uptick. Although Africa has a fast growing and rapidly urbanising population, its relatively low per capita income is holding back industry expansion leaving Africa to hold just over 2% of the total global air transport market. Airlines face a chicken vs egg conundrum; will more airline capacity and increased connectivity drive demand and stimulate economic growth in new markets? Turkish Airlines reported its passenger and cargo traffic results for May 2024, noting a 7.3% increase in capacity (#ASK) compared to 2023. The airline transported 7.2 million passengers, achieving an international load factor of 79.3% and a domestic load factor of 84.2%. #International-to-international transfer passengers grew by 3.6%, totaling 2.5 million. #Cargo and mail volume significantly rose 28.8%, reaching 174,400 tonnes. From January to May 2024, the number of #passengers increased by 5.7% to 32.8 million, while #cargo and mail volume grew by 33.7% to 814,700 tonnes. Soaring air cargo spot rates from Bangladesh and Japan and a surge in tonnages from Dubai have further boosted an already buoyant air cargo market in the first half of September, according to the latest weekly figures and analysis from WorldACD Market Data.
