There are areas that don't make money but create the hype and the atmosphere The healing fields The kids areas Car henge All the art installations These are the distinct areas that make Glasto different from any other music festival going The image and vibe is rooted in the '60s and the hippies But it is now consumed by the middle class Tickets are sold within 25 minutes and that is without the punters knowing who is headlining The most expensive part of Glasto, the bands, doesn't matter to the fans The emotional pull to be at Glasto far outweighs the functional value And check this, they raised the prices last year by about £100 and it didn't matter, still demand was through the roof And how much do they spend on marketing? I visited the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. And here's what you can learn from that. Last weekend, I visited the Berliner Philharmonie, home to the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Opened in 1963, this iconic concert hall broke away from the traditional "shoebox" design prevalent at the time. Instead of placing the orchestra on one side and the audience on the other, the architect positioned the stage in the center, surrounded by the audience in a 360-degree arrangement. Initially met with ridicule, this innovative design soon proved its worth by enhancing the acoustic experience and deeply engaging the audience. This radical approach to design not only transformed architectural norms for concert halls but also left us with invaluable lessons in entrepreneurship and life: 1️⃣ Break with Tradition: --------------------------------- Innovation often requires stepping away from conventional paths. Jesher Loi's journey from music to business showcases his belief that each person must follow their unique path. Initially pursuing a passion for music, Loi joined Ya Kun International Pte Ltd, the coffee-and-toast chain founded by his grandfather, Loi Ah Koon, in the 1940s. “Practicing composition, attending concerts, planning them, I had found what I truly loved to do,” he shared about his time at The Master's University in the US. However, family duty called, and Loi agreed to join Ya Kun in 2010, balancing his role with his musical pursuits. Now director of branding and market development, he also coaches youth string ensembles. “It’s a privilege to be able to do both,” Loi acknowledged. Leading a heritage business comes with significant responsibility. “Ya Kun bears my grandfather’s name. For my family to build so much, I owe it to them to take the business forward,” he said. This year, Ya Kun celebrates its 80th anniversary. Loi reflects on the company's achievements and future path, aiming to balance modernisation with tradition. In 2018, Ya Kun launched an app for in-store payments and loyalty points, a move towards digitalisation. "Implementing changes in a heritage business is no easy feat," he noted. Preserving the Ya Kun experience is crucial. “We know that people still want to see their coffee hand brewed in front of them, and we do strive to maintain that,” Loi asserted. Beyond customer experience, Loi focuses on company culture and employee growth. “How do we engage our staff to dream bigger, and how do we walk with them through their career journeys?” he asked. Loi is passionate about using the business to give back, continuing his family's legacy of compassion. “We have built a certain level of trust and consistency through our brand and our products. But that trust can be expanded,” he said. As Ya Kun reaches 80 years, Loi emphasizes the importance of the future. “80 is just a number. Streaming music is comfortable, but does not in any way support the artist. (Spotify pays a average of $0.003 per stream, plus if your music stays below 1000 streams/year, they don't pay at all) So, to keep the lights on over here in the studio, please stop by and buy. It is not a selfish request, by the way. Many people and businesses rely on artists. We pay studios, engineers, buy equipment, hire managers, booking agents, graphic designers, rent venues, pay colleagues for playing on our albums, pay for or hire promotion agencies, we bring people to venues so they can make a living, too. Not to mention the time, effort and emotional labor that goes into music making. The list goes on and on... At last, we do have families and pay for education, food, clothes and healthcare. And yes, we pay taxes, so we do actually contribute to the community, just as any other business. The glamor seems real, free and easy, but behind it every artist is a small business that's grinding every day to make money to produce its goods that you enjoy so much.
