Does anyone else hate buying cars…. I work in sales and when I see things like this it makes me sick. I hate the back and forth with the intermediate to the sales manager. Then I tell them I know the value of my trade in and they give me a low ball offer. You will not see a single dealership in all of California selling my exact car for under 75K. They literally offered 50K. Then to the other car they had at least a 20K markup. So in my estimation they would have made about 40K in profit on just my one deal. I am good with people making money but at no point could I justify 40K for the work they did. There were also multiple red flags I will not go into. Needless to say I told them the number I wanted and walked out. I received a message they could get me to that number (shocking). I still would not take the deal as they had established absolutely no credibility and had broken my trust from the start. I have purchased at least 6 cars from this group of dealerships and will never go back based on this one interaction. Transparency, trust and knowledge are how I have built my own book of business. These are the cornerstones of what I do. I encourage anyone to ask the difficult questions to your agent or any sales person.

Now that sales have slowed down, dealers keep contacting me asking what they can do to drive more service and parts business. Here is the cold hard truth on that topic. All these dealers completely screwed themselves by not focusing on service and parts during the good times. For the last decade, my 20 group members have heard me repetitively state that it can take a dealer a good 2-3 years to build up a team and a reputation in those departments. Do it when times are good, and you can fall back on those areas of the business when times are bad. In my opinion, there is very little these dealers can to do quickly turn things around in the short term. For the most part, they probably just need to spend some time focusing on training the service writers and counter associates, so that they are capitalizing on every customer who does actually come in the door, and they need to offer an incredible experience. Service customers primarily want 3 things - Fix it right - Fix it fast - Communicate Parts customers want - Knowledgeable staff - Items in stock - An employee who adds value (communication/enthusiasm) These dealers are just going to have to work through this tough spot reaping what they have sown. I’m sure many of them could spend incredible amounts of money on advertising, and it wouldn’t drive much business. After COVID-19, selling cars became easy, like picking low-hanging fruit. But as things are changing back to normal, it's time to brush up on those essential sales skills that got a bit rusty. Before, car sales involved talking to customers about what they might spend on their current car for things like tyres and repairs, and then showing how buying a new car could actually save them money. Lately, we haven't needed to do this much because cars were just flying off the lot. Many salespeople who started during or after COVID, or got used to easier sales, missed learning this. You’re a Winner!   Recently I watched a documentary on a Major league baseball teams training camp. What are they doing at this camp? They are instilling a winning mentality with these players. The players are being told, 1.      “If you strike out you will get on the next time. Don’t give up!” 2.     “If we are down a run or two, we can come back and win. Don’t give up!” 3.     “If we lose a game we will come back and win the next game. Don’t give up!” The same is true in car sales & in the Finance office.  Sometimes we don’t sell a car, catch every customer or hit a homerun. How will you respond?  That’s when maintaining composure comes into play. If the innings not over the games not over. We stay in the game and rally. You’re a winner! What can help increase your closing ratio in Car Sales and in the F&I office? In car sales here is a few things that need to happen: 1.     Make sure you are doing a proper meet and greet. First impressions matter. 2.     Make sure to utilize your managers to help you close the customers. These managers have sold hundreds of vehicles. They will help you win. Is your Finance Manager in a slump? 3.How about having the salesperson sit in the F& I office when you do the paperwork with the customers. Why? This will insure you offer a 100% of the products a 100% of the time. As F&I people we sometimes get tired of saying the same sales tracks over and over. Remember these customers have not heard this sales pitch in 3- 4 years on average or perhaps ever. Stay the course you are a winner! 4.     Set goals. Look at each customer as one of your bills being paid. Example: 1.     First deal sold pays your grocery bill. 2.     Second your utilities. 3.     Third fourth and fifth you’re housing. The moral to the story; Set goals! Stay positive! Don’t give up!
