Watching the Olympics this year has been inspiring and heartwarming. The upsets, the challenges, the underdogs, the abundance of good sportsmanship and goodwill.... these Olympics have been a wonderful example of how sports can bring out the best in humanity. Let us never forget that the sport industry can also bring out the worst policies in businesses, especially for women. I hope all the momentum that has been building this year for women's sports continues to grow so that it forces the industry to develop equitable practices (to include pay!). https://lnkd.in/g5HmVAPD

🌟 British long jumper Jazmin Sawyers shares her journey of "grieving" her chance to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics after rupturing her Achilles and the importance for athletes to discover an identity beyond sports. Her story perfectly illustrates the profound impact of athletes' identity loss on their well-being. 👉 This resonates deeply with our FWO project and the PhD project of Korneel Schepers, where we focus on supporting elite athletes throughout transitions, guiding and empowering them through the process of identity change. 🌱 For more information 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2w5-MHc 📽 Check out Jazmin's inspiring interview here: https://lnkd.in/emUnMKra 📢 "It was the emotional pain that hit me the hardest. I'm trying to push the message that it is so important to have an identity outside sport, outside of just being an athlete. Because if that's taken away from you by something out of your control, like a freak injury, you still need to know who you are and be confident that you have value and that you have a lot to offer. Because if you feel the only thing you have is being an athlete and that's gone, then you feel you have nothing. So I think cultivating that identity outside sport, when you're healthy, is really important, so you have those other aspects of yourself to lean on if sport isn't an option anymore." 🌟 🤝 In collaboration with Research Foundation Flanders - FWO, Sport Vlaanderen, Filip Boen, Niklas Steffens, Tegan Cruwys, Alex Haslam, & Catherine Haslam

Emma P. (Mason) Zwiebler, CEO of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI), tells WSA current levels of physical inactivity represent an existential threat to the industry. “If nothing changes, by 2030, we will see 500 million more people falling into ill health solely because they are not active enough and the cost to healthcare systems, just for their first year of treatment, will be $300 billion,” she says, quoting a World Health Organisation report. “For the sporting goods industry, if there are 500 million more people who are less likely to be active, they are less likely to consume the products that our industry provides. From our perspective, these statistics are incredibly worrying. WFSGI has a responsibility to raise the alarm bell about this and to point out that this is serious and that more action needs to be taken.” Read the full interview in our latest FREE feature. #sportswear #textiles #outdoorindustry #sports https://lnkd.in/eYBa7cb8

Integrity in Sports: Balancing Inclusivity and Fairness The Olympics not only celebrate athletic excellence but also set standards for sportsmanship and integrity across the globe. The recent controversy at the Paris Olympics, where Angela Carini withdrew from her match against Imane Khelif citing unfairness, raises critical questions about inclusivity and fairness in sports. Such incidents can have long-term impacts on athletes’ morale. It’s essential to address these issues thoughtfully, ensuring the spirit of fair play while promoting inclusivity. Sports have always been a unifying force, inspiring millions. Common phrases like “don’t be a spoil sport” and “that’s the sportsman spirit” remind us of the values we cherish. This incident should never have occurred, but its resolution must be decisive and clear to affirm that the Olympics is still the pinnacle of global sporting events. #IntegrityInSports #Inclusivity #FairCompetition

The Superbike Ladies League stands as a paragon of global sportsmanship and unity, driven by a statute that is as dynamic as the races it governs. This document is not merely a set of rules; it's the lifeblood of an association that champions the prowess of women on the superbike racing stage. Within its pages, the General Assembly emerges as the democratic pillar, where members' voices fuel the league's direction. The elected Board of Directors navigates with a vision that transcends borders, embodying the league's multinational ethos and commitment to excellence. Voting procedures reflect the league's inclusive spirit, ensuring every member, present or by proxy, shapes its future. Extraordinary Assemblies pivot with agility, addressing urgent matters with the same fervor as the races themselves. Minutes from each assembly are meticulously recorded, a testament to the league's transparency and dedication to history. The Internal Regulations, approved by the assembly, are the operational gears that keep the league's heart beating strong. The Superbike Ladies League's statute is a declaration of its global mission, a commitment to integrity, and a celebration of the indomitable spirit of women racers. It's a spectacle of governance that matches the thrill of the track—where strategy, speed, and solidarity ride in unison towards victory. 🏍️🌍🏆

Let's chat about barriers to girls and women in sports. One of the largest, but often not talked about, is negative body image. One of the best storylines coming out of this Olympic Games has been Ilona Maher's emergence as a social media goddess. Among the many inspiring moments, her defense of her weight and BMI on social media captured my attention. The Olympics showcases the best of the best, but it's also a powerful reminder that these fine-tuned machines we call athletes come in all shapes and sizes. As a former athlete standing at 6'1.5" and weighing 195 lbs at the peak of my career, I was often considered "overweight" by BMI charts despite having a low body fat percentage. Seeing Ilona utilize her platform to celebrate bodies in all shapes and sizes is incredibly inspiring. This is a significant step in breaking down the barriers that prevent girls from participating in sports. Ilona's message is clear: athletic excellence is not confined to one body type. We must continue to champion and celebrate diversity in athleticism, ensuring that every girl feels confident and empowered to pursue her sporting dreams. #Olympics #BodyPositivity #DiversityInSports #AthleteEmpowerment #Inspiration

The Olympics and Special Olympics serve as a good reminder that aspects of the body positivity and body neutrality movements, emphasizing health, wellness, self-acceptance, and inclusivity, are as relevant as ever. Ilona Maher, the phenomenal US Rugby player, is using her platform to shatter stereotypes about women's bodies. She’s blowing up on social media with her candid messages about being shamed for looking "too masculine," while reminding us that even the fittest women in the world have cellulite. Plus, she’s funny. A growing number of consumers appreciate seeing athletes of all sizes and shapes excelling in their sports, challenging traditional stereotypes of an athlete's body. Consumers are energized by female athletes like Ilona Maher, who break conventional standards and shatter long-held stereotypes about women’s sports and women's bodies. It may seem surprising to see athletes emerging as leaders of the body positivity movement, given the traditional image of an athlete aligns with societal ideals of physical perfection—lean, muscular bodies with low body fat. However, it’s not surprising that these athletes would rather focus on their achievements than their looks. This serves as a powerful reminder that body positivity remains relevant, offering opportunities to partner with body-positive athlete-influencers. #consumerinsights #bodypositivity #bodyneutrality #olympics

Brand marketing magic happens when branding campaigns are delightfully on point and harmoniously aligned with brand purpose and mission, and in this case this includes the thoughtful selection of their brand ambassador. (Surprisingly, some brands botch this important component and choose poorly based on trends rather than alignment ☹️) I ❤️ every bit of this branding campaign and partnership.

Brands x Athlete sponsors at its finest at the Olympics While watching the 100m heats, I noticed Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s watch and It wasn’t just any watch 😲 It was a $185k Richard Mille Automatic (07-04, to be precise ⌚) Shelly-Ann needs no introduction, representing Jamaica as a two-time Olympic gold medalist and running in absolute style She became a brand ambassador for the Swiss watch brand last year due to their shared vision of ‘legacy’ and pushing barriers As you can probably tell, I’m a huge luxury watch fan. Whenever there’s a presenter on TV or an athlete, I’m always trying to guess the exact model Her quote when signing the deal is perfect: "It's about pushing barriers. People have always told me what I could or couldn't do, so I wanted to be part of a brand that knows about timing, where age doesn't limit your progress.” Shelly-Ann embodies the definition of a strong woman, mother, and style queen. She ran 10.92 seconds, the second fastest time of the heats! Incredible!
