Recycling technologies are truly innovative and resourceful at present, ensuring extraction of gold, silver, platinum and rare earth minerals from old phones, laptops and televisions. Recycling responsibly, with KSPCB Karnataka licensed recyclers or Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) licensed recyclers is the first step to responsible disposal, and every bit of it is an important contribution to the creation of a secondary market for circular economy. The mineral processing strategies of the bloc and the EU present contrasting approaches towards self-sustainability. The bloc prioritizes internal processing to meet its mineral demands, aiming to process a substantial proportion of key minerals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and flake graphite. Specifically, the bloc targets processing 25% of its lithium, 76% of nickel, 51% of cobalt, 36% of manganese, and 20% of flake graphite needs. On the other hand, the EU focuses on recycling as a key aspect of its mineral sustainability strategy, albeit with slightly lower targets. The EU aims to recycle 22% of its lithium, 25% of nickel, 26% of cobalt, and 14% of manganese. However, challenges arise in graphite recycling in both regions due to limited commercial-scale initiatives, highlighting a common obstacle faced by the bloc and the EU in their mineral sustainability efforts. This disparity in mineral processing and recycling approaches between the bloc and the EU underscores the distinct paths each region is taking to ensure mineral sustainability. By understanding these differing strategies, both entities can navigate towards a more sustainable mineral future, each shaping their unique mineral landscapes.

Left unchecked, this could mitigate nations’ ability to decarbonize their #economies. Global #leaders have acknowledged the need to secure the critical minerals #supplychain, as the consequences of inaction have the potential to extend beyond the #lowcarbon #transition and #mining ecosystem to encompass #geopolitical, #economic and #environmental considerations. In a previous paper, #SMET discussed the risks of inaction along with collaborative #riskmanagement solutions. This #paper explores various approaches for unlocking critical minerals #supply. It identifies #barriers to #investment and #innovation in critical minerals and associated #solutions for addressing them.
