My name is Lisa Curran, I’m a Community Resource Specialist Assistant /VITA Scheduler at the River Center, a Family and Community Center, in Peterborough, New Hampshire. I’m the first face they see, and I welcome them with a smile without judgement. People/families come in for assistance, whether it is for help with electricity/ heat or looking for other resources/support. There are people/families in a crisis and I refer the clients to the best resource I know that would fit their needs/situation. From mid-January through April, I’m also the scheduler for our VITA tax clinic. This is my second year taking this on, along with my regular daily responsibilities. As of today, the call volume is extremely high, but I have been able to keep up with call backs within 2 business days to set up appointments. I honestly believe my heart brought me to The River Center, to help families in the community that need an organization that will listen and give support. Being able to make a difference/impact in others' lives and being a part of their progress, accomplishments, achievements is what fuels the work I do. I thrive in environments where I can constantly learn new things. It helps me grow both professionally and personally. I have always believed in teamwork and communication; this makes an organization shine. Working in an area that interests me and inspires me to keep learning and have flexibility. There are many sources of inspiration, feeling the benefits of supporting, how you change lives, whether it was just a little, you are the reason for their smile and the hope back in their eyes. #DyingMattersAwarenessWeek: Bereavement is a procedure with different time frames for people. Specifically, in dementia grief is often encountered prior to the actual death of the individual known as ‘anticipatory grief’. The evidence highlights that the need for bereavement support starts long before the person with dementia dies. The person itself and family members experience grief of gradual loss of their previous physical, mental, psychological, social, and even financial status during the trajectory of dementia. There are approximately 700.000 family carers in the UK supporting people living with dementia (Dementia statistics. 2014). Supporting a family member with dementia at their end-of-life can be time consuming and many times a full-time occupation for the family carer . This may mean termination of their previous profession, resulting to a financial drawback. According to Edkins (2011), it took 54% of the family carers over a year to realise their caring role and 24% of them between 1-4 years. This delay led to an impact on their physical, mental and financial health. Additionally, it may often result to a social isolation not only due to the lack of free time for the family carer but also due to the stigma that surrounds people experiencing dementia and their family members.
