Starting tomorrow night, the world’s 1.9 billion Muslims enter the holiest month of the year. If you think it’s just about fasting from food and drink, you haven’t even scratched the surface. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars — or duties — of Islam, along with the testimony of faith, prayer, charitable giving, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca. A typical day during Ramadan is starts early and ends late: – Waking up well before dawn to eat the first meal of the day – Praying at dawn, to perform the morning prayer. – Performing the regular afternoon and mid-afternoon prayers throughout the day. – Breaking the fast at the time of the sunset prayer. – Performing the night prayer followed by a lengthy group prayer (Taraweeh) in the mosque. – Filling pockets of your free time with extra prayer, increased charity, and intense study of the Quran. Sounds intense? Sure but the spiritual intensive of Ramadan provides multiple benefits 👉 Spiritual Impact: Patience, Self-Discipline, Gratitude, Humility, Purification etc. 👉 Personal Impact: Resilience, Focus, Self-Control, Time Management, Grit etc. 👉 Social Impact: Generosity, Community, Kindness, Empathy, Leadership etc. How to show respect and support for Muslims observing Ramadan? – Take the time to learn about Ramadan – Ask considerate questions – Make accommodations for flexible work schedules, PTO and workload – Remember that people observe Ramadan in different ways – Make an effort to be flexible with people observing Ramadan. – Leave your pity at the door, (we can handle the fast). 🌙 Ramadan Mubarak. Wishing everyone a blessed Ramadan. Thank you all friends, colleagues and allies of our network for promoting an inclusive and diverse professional community and workplaces. 💚 #ramadan #ramadan2024 #diversityandinclusion #culture

Re-Defining Philanthropy Sadaqa, or #voluntaryphilanthropy, is a cornerstone of Islamic practice and a prominent value within Somali communities. This focus goes beyond random acts of kindness. It fosters a spirit of mutual support, where neighbors help each other through challenges. This is deeply embedded in the social fabric of Somali society. #Philanthropy doesn't always require material wealth. Many acts of generosity come from individuals with limited resources, who offer their time (Waqti), strength (Xoog), and action (Waxqabad). “It is deep-rooted within the Somali tradition that the community helps each other when a crisis occurs; this is what we stand for as a group.” Khadija from Dhanaha Group in an IDP Camp in Badhan District, Sanaag Region #LocalSolutions: Adeso's Saxansaxo Approach Adeso's Saxansaxo approach prioritizes community ownership in humanitarian response. It recognizes the inherent generosity within communities and strengthens their efforts through microgrants. This approach fosters collective resilience and co-creates with communities to build a brighter sustainable future. Ramadan is expected to start on the evening of March 10th when the new thin waxing crescent becomes visible. The fast will start the following dawn after the suhoor (pre-dawn meal). The fast is broken after sunset with the iftar. How are you preparing to support your Muslim employees during Ramadan? 1. Many but not all Muslim people fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan. Tip: Be mindful of this before offering food and beverages and if you see someone eating don't ask why 2. Muslim employees need flexibility to spend time in prayer, with family & friends. Tip 1: Trust your employees to do their work and respect their PTO without question Tip 2: Let your employees know you welcome them asking for a different schedule pattern during Ramadan 3. Muslim people engage in charitable activities during Ramadan Tip: Share information about matching donation programs and connect around giving opportunities you might support. 4. It is a beautiful time of reflection, remembrance, faith, and family that may feel harder for many Muslims due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Tip: Show empathy to your Muslim employees. Act with humanity and support them unconditionally during Ramadan. Don't wait until March 10th to show support to your Muslim employees. #ramadan2024 #inclusion #leadership

DAY 3 Empathy and Compassion: Ramadan fosters empathy and compassion towards those who are less fortunate, igniting a spirit of humanitarianism and social responsibility. As individuals experience hunger and thirst firsthand, they gain a profound appreciation for the blessings of sustenance and nourishment. This heightened awareness of their own privilege prompts Muslims to empathize with the struggles of the impoverished and marginalized members of society. Inspired by the teachings of Islam, believers are encouraged to extend a helping hand to those in need, exemplifying the principles of charity, generosity, and compassion. Through acts of kindness and altruism, Muslims strive to alleviate the suffering of others, embodying the spirit of Ramadan beyond the confines of fasting. #Ramadan #fasting #islam

Today marks the beginning of Ramadan (رَمَضَان), the Muslim holy month of fasting. 1.8 billion Muslims (24% of the world's population) are observing in some way including: ☽ spiritual reflection ☽ self-improvement ☽ fasting ☽ prayer ☽ charity ☽ community gathering From around 11 March to 9 April, many Muslims, including myself, will fast daily from dawn until sunset during the lunar month. This means abstaining from food, drink, smoking, sexual activity, negative thoughts and conflict. We don't even drink water! Ramadan is a special time of year with many evening gatherings of family and friends and nightly communal prayers. This year, however, festivities are somber in the shadow of war in Gaza while Palestinians suffer through indiscriminate violence, collective punishment, forced displacement, and state-sponsored oppression. Here's how you can support your Muslim friends and colleagues during this time: ✅ Take an interest in Ramadan and educate yourself about this month. ✅ Offer flexible scheduling, especially around meal and prayer times. ✅ Schedule important activities post-Ramadan (especially if they can wait). ❌ Don't ask why someone is NOT fasting. It could be for several reasons. ❌ Don't schedule late afternoon meetings when energy may be lowest. ✨ Finally, feel free to wish us Happy Ramadan (bonus points if you say it in Arabic: 'Ramadan Mubarak' or 'Ramadan Kareem')! PS. How are you supporting your Muslim friends and colleagues this month? #DiversityAndInclusion #Ramadan2024 #CeasefireNow

Humanity first, always. At World Central Kitchen, we believe that feeding people in need is a fundamental act of compassion and solidarity. In Ramadan, the values of compassion, generosity, and empathy are amplified. It's a time for reflection, gratitude, and above all, a time to prioritize the well-being of others. At WCK, we understand the importance of embodying these values through our actions. Our teams in Gaza are working tirelessly to provide nourishing meals to Palestinians on the brink of starvation. During this sacred month of Ramadan, we are working to provide 92,000 food boxes—4.7 million meals—to families in desperate need. Please consider supporting our work by sending a Ramadan box to Gaza. Ahmad* is a resilient 14-year-old from Darfur, whose world crumbled when his father was killed during conflict, and then his village was reduced to ashes. Faced with the harsh reality of his circumstances, Ahmad had to make impossible decisions for his own survival and was conscripted as a child soldier. He was only 12 years old at the time he learned to wage war. But with the help of our donors, LUV became Ahmad's lifeline last year, rescuing him from the throes of heartache, depression, and despair. Given the opportunity to learn, this courageous young soul has dreams that soar higher than the ashes of his past. Ahmad aspires to be a pilot, a symbol of freedom and limitless possibilities. His story is a testament to the transformative power of rescue and education, which can better lives even in the hardest to reach places. Ahmad's journey is not just about survival; it's about rising above adversity and reaching for the skies. On this Valentine's Day, our mission is clear: to protect and support children escaping war in Sudan.
