If you are looking for professional mentors, here are a few things I would like to share to help you find mentors who are likely to have a meaningful impact on you. Find mentors based on the following criteria, among other things you might want to look for: Those who - are authentic and expressive (if they speak less, you are likely to find it challenging to understand what they are thinking) - reveal the “why” of things, because that is what gives you depth of thought - nudge you to think for yourself and guide you on how to think rather than what to think (this seems like a no-brainer but such mentors are hard to find) - keep your long-term well-being and success in mind rather than impatiently push you for short-term results - share what they learnt from their own mistakes and failures (such mentors know how to be vulnerable without being insecure) - understand your value (what is the point of a mentor who does not get who you are?!)

I’ve heard the word ‘mentor’ thrown around a lot in my personal life and in corporate settings. I wonder if I’m the only one that felt having a mentor was more of a burden – just another relationship to maintain. My mindset was geared towards seeking answers rather than understanding how to think, precisely what a good mentor will challenge you to do. You seek permission or forgiveness from a manager, but from a mentor, you seek perspective. Recently, I discovered a valuable exercise showcasing a mentor’s impact. Now, try this: raise your hand as high as you can. Pause. Now, go a bit higher. If you moved your hand higher, ask yourself why you didn’t do that the first time. A mentor extracts that extra 10% you didn’t know you had. Find yourself a mentor if you want to be better. Did this resonate with anyone?

Whenever we are stuck at something and we don't know what to do, the one person who can pull us out is our mentor. Very few realize the importance of a mentor, until its late or too late in certain cases. I was fortunate to have found my mentors, exactly when I needed them the most. So, have my problems completely vanished after finding my mentor? Do I get any special treatment? Do I get my questions answered? What did I do to find them? The most important thing which happened after finding a mentor is, I started believing in myself. My potential was unlocked. I could see what to avoid. The possibility of committing errors reduced. I started following them & their process, without doubting. Yes, I get questions & they answer them. I started investing in myself & my potential rather than my doubts & insecurities. My context expanded. I don't always get the cute soft love, I have to face hard reality & harsh truth. But it's always worth to know it from them rather than learning on our own. Mentor gives us speed. We can find many people who may suggest what to do in our life, but a mentor is someone who tells us, what not to do. And trust me, this becomes the gamechanger.
