This #WorldCancerDay, we turn our attention to the unique challenges posed by rare cancers. The rare disease community and the rare cancer community are sometimes regarded as two different worlds, but this is not the case. People living with a rare cancer often face challenges which are unfortunately familiar to the entire rare disease community. The Rare Cancer Advocates Network was established by EURORDIS to increase the visibility of the collective work of rare cancer patient advocates in raising awareness of rare cancer patients’ challenges and needs, across all types of rare cancers and ages. February 4th marks World Cancer Day. Every person who receives a cancer diagnosis and treatment hopes for one thing: to beat it. Without the effort of those who work in research, healthcare and drug development, and the advancements they have made, we would be in a much tougher place than we are now in the fight against cancer. Only by recognising the barriers to access, by challenging ourselves and others, and by listening to the unique perspectives of people living with cancer around the world can we begin to improve cancer care for everyone. With the evolution and advancements that have developed beyond traditional chemotherapy to targeted therapies, immuno-oncology, and individualized treatments, there are so many reasons to be optimistic. Everybody in some way, shape or form has been affected by the impacts of cancer. World Cancer Day is a reminder that every day is a chance to contribute to the prevention, treatment and understanding of cancer. On World Cancer Day, we stand united in the fight against cancer, driven by a shared mission to 'Close the Care Gap'. This initiative underscores the need for equitable access to care, highlighting our collective responsibility towards making meaningful progress. At Novartis ANZ, our dedication to advancing cancer research and patient care continues every day, inspired by stories of resilience and collaboration. Together, we strive for a future where cancer's impact is diminished, driven by innovation and partnership. We also welcome and acknowledge the funding provided by the Australian Government on the weekend to accelerate the collection of metastatic cancer stage and recurrence data. This announcement builds on recommendations from the Australian Cancer Plan and the important advocacy work led by Breast Cancer Network Australia to improve cancer outcomes. When it comes to cancer, here are some things I know to be true:   - 1 in 3 people in the United States will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.   - Breast and prostate cancer are the most common types of cancer diagnosed among women and men in the US, respectively.   - Disparities exist in outcomes for breast and prostate cancer. For example, Hispanic women are more likely to be diagnosed with later-staged breast cancer in comparison to White women. Black men are over two times more likely to die from prostate cancer than men in other ethnic groups.   At #ASCO2024, I met with Karen Knudsen MBA PhD and other members of American Cancer Society. One of the things we discussed was our new “Change the Odds” partnership initiative. Our aim is to address cancer disparities and improve health outcomes in medically underrepresented communities across the US, focusing on screening access, patient support navigation and clinical trial education. While we are focusing on breast and prostate cancer to start, we hope to expand to additional cancer types, as well as engage additional partners, to help reach as many people as possible.   We have much to do, but we’re rolling up our sleeves and ready to start working. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 19,680 women will be newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2024, and about 12,740 women will die from the disease.
