Just attended the "Planning While Black: Sustaining an Inclusive Urban Renaissance" panel at the American Planning Association conference, and I'm truly inspired! It's a powerful reminder of how crucial equity is in urban planning. As planners, we must keep communities at the heart of every decision. Let's commit to making equity and inclusivity the foundation of our work. #UrbanPlanning #EquityInAction #APAConference

As a woman-owned business that prioritizes partnering with other woman-owned and diverse-owned commercial building contractors and suppliers, Freedom Construction brings a much-needed diverse perspective and labor force to the West Michigan industry and economy. According to recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: - Only 9.9% of construction industry professionals nationwide are women. - 6.2% are black. - 2% are Asian. Bringing diversity to the industry isn’t just about race or gender; it’s about bringing skills and experiences honed from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Ultimately, this convergence of diverse abilities allows us to better serve all people in the community, combat unconscious bias, see around corners, catch oversights in planning, and logistically, tap into a labor force that is underutilized in the industry. #womeninconstruction #minoritiesinconstruction #westmichigan

🌆 Greater Washington's resilience shines as new development projects emerge in 2023, even amidst economic challenges. From innovative office-to-residential conversions to fresh public housing initiatives, our region is buzzing with potential. In D.C., where over $81.6 billion in projects have been realized since 2000, the focus is shifting. The trend? More mixed-use and residential endeavors, reflecting our city's dynamic needs. Our recent State of the District and Region Conference shed light on this evolution. Leaders, including Alex Orfinger of the Washington Business Journal, emphasized the significance of revitalizing downtown and fostering business growth. Gerren Price of Downtown D.C. BID highlighted the strategic importance of transforming underutilized spaces, adapting to the city's growth trajectory. D.C.'s future is bright, and we're here for it! This Black History Month, we're taking a look back at a Transportation For America & Smart Growth America report from last summer – Divided by Design. The report details the damage and inequities deliberately created by and in the federal transportation program from ~1950 onward, how our current transportation program is rooted in the previous era and exacerbates inequities, and what needs to change. "If our elected, appointed, and civil transportation decision-makers fail to understand how current USDOT guidance and state DOT actions are still actively harming low-income people, people of color, older people, and people with disabilities, they cannot begin to truly rectify these injustices. Their intent to do things differently or better than their publicly racist forebears in the 1950s and 1960s is irrelevant when many of those previous practices are still deeply embedded in the transportation policies and standards of today. Today’s leaders must understand how the past is still shaping current practices. They must reevaluate how their decisions are made and who their decisions serve." #BlackHistoryMonth https://lnkd.in/gM32fUft
