The fuselage is structured as a semi-tension or partial tension field beam, with a light aluminum skin that buckles diagonally under shear load, functioning effectively in tension. This design approach, aimed at achieving a lighter fuselage, was meticulously developed by Boeing to create an innovative and lightweight airframe. Given the critical requirement for extended range, saving every pound in the airframe translates to an additional pound of fuel capacity at the same takeoff weight. Is that so??

There’s no margin of error when it comes to aerospace machining. ✈️ Flight critical is its own standard, and any failure or malfunction can result in catastrophic failure. Keeping people safe is the primary imperative, whether we're talking about a plane carrying passengers to their destination or a missile staying on track. Boeing has just made their Aerospace Safety Timeline tool public! It was demonstrated to us a few months ago, and I was blown away. Until today, it was only for internal use. Take a look at the timeline – it's amazing how they're visualizing the data in such an impactful way. What is very striking in this image is the extent to which the fuselage has pretty well fully combusted while the wings (still largely metal alloy?) are largely intact. Also, I wonder what the toxicity of the smoke would be, presumably containing a large amount of micro-carbon fibres? Possibly one of the first examples of a major fibre on a mainly carbon-fibre composite construction.

I am pleased to announce that our latest paper, entitled "Preliminary Performance Analysis of Medium-Range Liquid Hydrogen-Powered Box-Wing Aircraft" and available at the following link https://lnkd.in/dd58jZTz, has been published in the Aerospace MDPI Special Issue "Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation for Climate-Neutral Transport Aviation". The paper discusses the main issues that need to be addressed in the design of hydrogen-based aircraft with tube-and-wing and box-wing airframes. The results show that the volume constraints imposed by the installation of hydrogen tanks have a significant impact on aircraft performance; however, this adverse effect can be mitigated in the case of box-wing airframe.
