1️⃣ MADRID’S NO.1 In March, and as a Madrid citizen myself, I’m sure I wasn’t alone in noticing the SPSG Consulting Report highlighting that Padel had overtaken football (soccer) as Madrid’s most popular sport to play. As a football fan - though no guessing whether I’m part of the Club Atlético de Madrid or the Real Madrid C.F. side of Madrid! - and someone who has worked in the football industry for almost 20 years for Atlético and Real - I am not surprised at the continued passion for football in my home city. But, nor am I surprised to see the growing love for padel, a sport that has, unlike many parts of the world, been around in my country for 50 years. Padel continues to boom in Madrid, and across Spain, with, according to International Padel Federation, over 16,000 courts nationwide. And that’s a trend we’re witnessing in other countries where Hexagon Cup is focussed, such as France where there are approximately 2,150 courts now. How much do professional padel players earn? As popularity skyrockets, so too are player earnings. The emergence of Premier Padel, the new world tour owned by Qatar Sports Investments, has been a game changer for player prize pool. Players' take for winning Major events now exceeds USD50k, up 2.5x from the Masters Final of the World Padel Tour Newly formed competitions like Pro Padel League in the US and Hexagon Cup in Europe distribute prize pools of USD1m+ while others like Ultimate Padel Tour UPT and Reserve Cup distribute about a quarter of this. Having been in consumer insights for a long time, I can tell you that 99% of celebrity endorsements or celebrity collaborations are to put it mildly, not "thought through". They are done under some random diktat or to satisfy someone's egoistic idea of brand building On top of it, most brand managers don't even undertake a basic consumer study to understand the "brand -celebrity fit" or the " benefits to the brand" before splurging on celebrity endorsements/associations. They are afraid of doing even a "pre-post" lest they are asked some tough questions, and everyone plays ball :) In that context, Dove with its pivot towards " Real Women Real Beauty" (basically accepting the fact that hardly anyone looks like the models in Dove's ads ) might have hit a home run with this.
