DID HOU KNOW? The Houston Rockets became back-to-back World Champions on June 14, 1995, with a thrilling NBA Finals sweep against the Orlando Magic. The team’s triumphant win at The Summit was punctuated by several memorable moments, including Clyde Drexler’s electrifying breakaway dunk and Hakeem Olajuwon’s unexpected three-point attempt in Houston’s 113-101 victory of Game 4. However, it was head coach Rudy Tomjanovich’s impassioned speech that truly etched that moment in Houston sports lore. Despite being the preseason favorites, the Rockets’ path to their second consecutive title was far from easy. With a sixth-seed playoff berth and nail-biting final games in their first two series, many doubted their chances. But Tomjanovich’s team proved the naysayers wrong, silencing critics and cementing their place in NBA history. In a post-game interview with Bob Costas, “Rudy T” made his feelings clear, still simmering from the lack of belief in his team. “No one’s ever done what this team’s done,” he began. “Come from the sixth seed, down in series. We won nine road games, and we had non-believers all along the way. I have one thing to say to those non-believers. Don’t ever underestimate the heart of a champion.” That soundbite has become legendary, still inspiring Rockets fans to this day. Tomjanovich’s iconic phrase has been replayed countless times, and has become a Houston rallying cry. The Rockets’ championship win and Tomjanovich’s defiant speech continue to inspire, a testament to the power of determination and the heart of a champion. #houstonrockets #rocketsbasketball #houstonhistory #houstontx #HoustonTexas #HoustonCityBeat #DIDHOUKNOW

2022 NYS Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee | Yankee Stadium Tour Director, (Ret.), Baseball Historian (SABR),| American History, Environmentalist - NYBG | Fmr. Adjunct Professor - Fordham University
In the 1960s, there was yet another change in baseball’s structure—the draft (and we’re not talking about the war here). As reported by Matt Kelly of the Baseball Hall of Fame: “Created in 1965 to restore competitive balance and to curb the inflated signing bonuses given to unproven players, the amateur draft is now recognized by MLB teams as a crucial tool to ensuring their long-term success.” The amateur draft offers the lower-ranked baseball teams the earliest selections to sign the best prospects from the talent pool. In effect, this hurt teams like the more successful Yankees and Dodgers, who would, in most cases, be the preferred choice of the ballplayer. #Baseball #History #AmericanHistory #NationalPastime #TheNewYorkGame #Education #NYSBaseballHOF #AmericanLeague #Yankees #Draft
