“The exhibition outlines three main concerns: the actual production of buildings (including actors and stakeholders, materials, and design), the question of reciprocity and possible counter-gifts, and the afterlives of gifted buildings in the sense of responsibilities and maintenance.” In the latest JAE Online Review, architectural historian, media scholar, and curator Sina Brückner-Amin provides an overview and analysis of the exhibition “The Gift” at the Architecture Museum of the TUM. Curated by Damjan Kokalevski and Lukasz Stanek, the exhibition ran from February 28 to September 8, 2024. Visit https://bit.ly/3WM0Zav to read the full review. What does it take to sustain human life in space? We explored that and more as part of the “Life Beyond Earth” installation at the 2024 Xiamen International Design and Art Exhibition in China. The show brought together work from architecture firms, designers, and artists representing 15 countries and regions. SOM’s installation, first presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021, emerged from a multidisciplinary initiative launched by the European Space Agency to study the potential for long-term human habitats on the Moon. The project inspired visitors to envision future societies in new environments and to confront the challenges for sustaining human life in the conditions of outer space. MORE → bit.ly/3U2savc

The making of Mexico City: "As a coda, SMA’s work itself could be seen as a synecdoche of the city. It has woven through the urban form for almost 100 years as it has evolved into one of today’s archetypal mega-cities. Over that period SMA have evolved from sophisticated modernist architects to imaginative designers and developers, intimately interested in the commercial, social, cultural and religious life of the city where they are based." Some decisions are almost instantaneous, coming directly from the gut. When I got the call from Queralt Garriga, Francesc Camps Palou, Cris Marcos & Andrea Palomino de la Fuente I didn't give it a second thought. There was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to be part of the curatorial team of the first architecture museum in Spain: La Casa de la Arquitectura. How to connect the three elements: the museum itself, the website and the catalogued architectural works all over Spain, into a coherent narrative? How to engage a non-specialized public with the importance of architecture? How to reach out to young architects who are generally so demoralized and undervalued these days? And lastly, is it possible to build a leading site capable of transmitting the transformative power of architecture? We answered all these questions and more in our ON SITE_ON LINE proposal which garnered second place in the public contest run by Ministerio de Vivienda y Agenda Urbana Keep reading about the project here: https://lnkd.in/dD5HAnrx #digital #publiccontest #architecture #communication

Did you know that housing in Mexico is a fundamental right, enshrined in the constitution? It is therefore the responsibility of the state to ensure that every citizen has adequate and decent housing. But what exactly does “adequate” mean? Architect Tatiana Bilbao addresses this very question. She places people at the centre, integrates the social perspective into the discourse and sees the role of architecture among other things as democratising beauty. We met her and spoke to her about her work, architecture, structures in space, the symbolic dimension of light and the metropolis of Mexico City. Get to know more about her here or read the article entitled “Social Perspective” in our new magazine F_03.
