Some thoughts as #financial literacy month is coming to an end: Since the 1980s, economic mobility in the US has significantly declined, contributing to heightened political polarization and a slowdown in economic growth. Consumer financial services play a crucial role in this downturn. Most banking products presuppose familial financial guidance by design, burdening users with co-signer requirements, and security deposits. For young adults whose parents are unable to assist, personal finance hence seems uniquely unapproachable. It is precisely these less privileged young adults who are faced with some of the most consequential financial decisions (e.g., student loans) at a young age. In the absence of financial literacy education or financial advisory assisting these decisions, many communities are trapped in cycles of poverty. In short, those who require financial advice most urgently receive the least. Making financial products accessible to young adults is essential to create more meritocratic economic mobility. At Fizz we are committed to this work and are continuing to built products that help thousands of students get on a path to financial independence.
