Day 58 of Living the Dream Day 51 of 2024 was another day of living the dream. I’m so glad when the opportunity clock sounded, I responded. I’m increasingly realizing that my life is meant to touch many people. Both in-person and virtually, I touched more than 40 people. Engaging with these diverse individuals fueled my passion. I’ve learned so much through the discipline process of allocating my 168 hours a week. I seeing more and more how I need to automate, delegate, and eliminate tasks. I’m learning I need to focus my efforts and my pricing. There are some experimental changes that I’ll be implementing in my business and life moving forward. Over the last two months, my wife and I implemented a new routine at home, and we have seen a massive decrease in stress and increased productivity. Business is a value-creating entity, and I’m more and more compelled to ensure that it’s operating profitably and sustainably. Over the last two years, I’ve enjoyed creating value for clients, the team, vendors, and the community. Operating a business is hard work, but it’s good work. Today, many people need a safe, secure, and satisfying place to work and learn. My goal is to make that a reality. It was great to catch up with my wife and children at home. I always enjoy the warm reception of my children. Everyone wants to play with me, no matter the time. My family life is one of the most telling points of living the dream. I’m witnessing my children and my wife flourishing. It has been difficult to detect any progress in the past, but our sacrifice and God’s grace are paying off. Day 59 of Living the Dream Day 52 of 2024 was another of living the dream. The opportunity clock sounded, and I fought to seize it on time, but eventually, I answered the call. In the big city of Houston, the day was cooler in the morning, and it warmed up to be a beautiful day, so warm that I wanted to use my AC in my truck, but I chose the natural breeze. I used to listen to books at normal speed until I heard someone talk about listening at higher speeds. I started small and worked my way up to 3x speed. I don't listen to books to consume content but to acquire ideas. Listening to and reading books helps me gain valuable knowledge and become a better writer for my first book. My work has brought me into contact with many different people, and I enjoy getting to know people, working with people, and serving people. Sometimes, I want to throw in the towel and give up on the business, but I begin to think about the many people who need me to press forward. Today, my business created value for our clients, team, vendors, and community. I'm looking to scale my business on a greater level, which will take me maximizing my resources and collaborating with others. I've been doing discipleship with young men on the college campus. One of the young men had an unfortunate situation occur. I was the first person he called since we had met weekly, reading through God's word and discussing how to navigate life. This situation made him want to do something terrible and revert to life on the streets, but I challenged him to think about the progress he'd made and that he was bigger and better than that. I told him he's a winner. He heard me and decided to do the correct thing in moving forward. I was excited about his response at that moment. The year in review a little early. This was a big year for me on a lot of levels and I had some time to catalog it on my drive this morning when my audiobook wasn't working. I like bullet lists so I will hit the lowlights and the highlights in that format: Lowlights: - I did not reach my monthly revenue goals more than once or twice all year, nothing new and I did come closer than in the past, but also leads to my second - Raised price of my services for the first time in a very long time and need to raise them again in January...still below market rate for most of the work but not something I like to do - I lost my temper with my children more often than I would like (I would like never to), mostly when I let the stress of the work that I do creep into my time out of office Highlights: - Made Partner in January - Reached over 1,000 copies of my book handed out - Started presenting Medicaid Seminars on a regular basis - Named King County Bar Association's Outstanding New Lawyer 2023 - Nearly/slightly more than (depending on how November's numbers come out on paper) doubled my income from last year - Admitted that I am human and started medication and therapy for my mental health issues that were being negatively impacted by the stress of work - Helped teach my oldest to drive better than a large portion of the others on the road in Washington - Got my office organized (95%+) and kept it that way for more than a week at a time (my brain and my personal living/working spaces tend towards the chaotic side of the spectrum...I am entropy incarnate) - Built a gallery wall(s) of art in my office that brings me joy every day - Cut coffee consumption to 16oz most days and rarely more than 24oz (over a gallon at several points last year and 32-64 most of the first half of this year) - Embraced Ubuntu and changed the way that I think about my daily interactions with everyone - Got my first tattoo in 20 years, a semicolon tattoo gotten alongside a dear friend getting one of her own, and realized that there is more symbolism and deep personal meaning to this one than all of my others combined I guess the highlights outnumber the lowlights. Must have been a good year...looking forward to a better one next year!
