Exploring Tips When we're out exploring cool places, it's super important to be nice to nature and the special spots we visit. Here's what we can do: No Littering: Keep our surroundings clean by putting trash in the right places. Let's use bins or carry our garbage until we find one. This helps keep animals safe and our environment healthy. Hands Off Artifacts: When we see cool old stuff, like ancient artifacts, it's best not to touch them unless someone says it's okay. These things are delicate and we want to make sure they stick around for others to enjoy too. Respect Wildlife: If we see animals, it's best to admire them from a distance. We shouldn't try to feed them or get too close. Let's give them space to live their lives without being bothered. By doing these simple things, we're showing love and care for our planet and the amazing places and creatures that call it home. New Post: Why people love wilderness?   -Once we experience the wilderness, many of us fall in love with it. Where does this love and admiration come from? At first glance, it seems that the love to wilderness has its roots since the time of the initial connection of man with nature. But is it really so? How did we come to love the wilderness? The land where our early ancestors lived was a true wilderness. Land without any trail, path, road. Without any settlements. How do we take action to protect the things that are important to us? 🩷 One of the goals we set when starting the #45hard was that we wanted to finish cutting the tracks in the bush in line with a trapping grid that we’ve put in over the past few years ✅ Essentially the method here (Adam’s brainchild, with help from friends who have been doing it for many years) is to create lines in the bush with traps every 50m or so 🙌 Once the traps are in, we’re now marking the tracks with these colourful markers, a bit like you might have seen out in the bush around Aotearoa 💫 Usually; 🧡 Orange means a walking/hiking track (you see these most commonly in the bush on main tracks) 💙 Blue means a trap line 🩷 Pink means a trap Plenty of other colours are used in specific areas, often to mark different trapping lines or more difficult walking tracks 🥾 Tonight Adam did some track cutting with the chainsaw, and I marked a bunch of trees so it’s easy to come through and service the traps 👌 We’re already seeing a heap more birds coming back into the area, and only a few minutes ago were treated to kererū and tui chilling out in trees just outside the house 🏡 Really awesome to be able to combine our exercise with doing great things for biodiversity and conservation 🌱 #biodiversity #conservation #exercise #nzbush #native #birds #predatorcontrol

Once you’re into this “birding thing”, it is only natural to want to see as many different birds as you can. When you combine this desire with the limited number of peak migration days and busy work schedules, you can easily see where the concept of “Big Days” comes from. While most of us don’t go out in the spring to set a new species sighting record for a single day, it is fun to challenge ourselves year after year to see if we can beat our personal best. One of the best parts for me is the planning of big days. Where should we go? What time should we put ourselves at our warbler spots? What areas have the best shorebird habitat this year?
