Lake Chad is an essential source of freshwater in Africa. According to the Lake Chad Basin Commission, it has shrunk by more than 90 percent over the past 60 years due to droughts and decreased rainfall. On #earthday2024 we turn our attention to this water source and efforts by the Lake Chad Bassin Conservation project to apply nature-based climate solutions to six Lake Chad Basin wetlands sites in Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the project will enhance the climate resilience of ecosystems and marginalized communities structurally vulnerable to climate change. 🌍 📸 Climate Photo of the Week on #InternationalDayofForests 🌳 The forests are disappearing before our eyes, driven by the demand of woods for construction (This photo was taken in one of the markets in #Kakuma refugee camp where poles are sold to the refugees). But as the trees vanish, so does our ability to combat climate change. It's imperative to engage the local communities in meaningful dialogue about conservation and sustainable practices such as raising awareness about the link between deforestation and environmental degradation. By fostering understanding and genuine collaboration, we can mitigate the effects of climate change and build a brighter future for all. Let's protect our planet for generations to come! 🚸 #ClimateActionNow #SaveOurForests #Reforestation #ClimateAwareness #InternationalDayofForests

What do we mean when we talk about climate project impact? The answers can differ widely, so it’s important to ask further questions. Using our project spotlight Rwanda Bamboo River Restoration as an example, we share how we measure and qualify this restoration project’s impact. Which dimension is most important for your climate goals? Tell us in the comments! #beyondcarbon #rwanda #climateproject #climateaction #community #climateimpact

A while back I posted ‘climate change is here, not as something that is still coming’, and yet we (private, public and individuals) are still not sure how to deal with it holistically, especially the knock-on effect. Listen to Karen King‘s example to think broader than repairing the damage caused by climate events as we have seen it happen in different parts of the country. While at it, also keep in mind that some of us are talking about this from a privileged position, how do we include everyone in the discussion? Great talk Karen King!
Our Director for Climate Resilience, Karen King speaks on #WorldWaterDay about why water is a human rights issue; what’s going wrong with water management in South Africa and why floods and droughts need to be dealt with as two sides of the same coin, rather than as separate issues.
