If you missed our MUTCD updates webinar last week, you missed out! (And we missed you 😘) One of the big questions we tried to answer was: When do changes take effect, and when will states be required to comply? The short answer is the federal document is already in effect! (as of Jan. 18) If you're in a state that adopts the national MUTCD by statute, it may already be the law of the land where you are. If, however, you're in a state like Texas, California, or Minnesota, then you'll have to wait for your state to revise and adopt its own state-issued manual. No matter what, all states must be in *substantial conformance* with the national MUTCD by Jan. 18, 2026. So, even if your state is still using an older manual, it's worth getting to know the MUTCD-11.
