🌍 Thrilled to have attended the ESG Leadership Conference hosted by BLF. It’s inspiring to see the growing commitment of companies to sustainability. One key takeaway: according to IPSOS research, the “S” in ESG identifies employees as the most critical element, yet so few companies actively engage in this area. What if we could empower them to make a tangible social impact? 🤔 I believe this could be a game-changer! After all, if you can’t measure it, it’s like it doesn’t exist — a powerful reminder from one of the keynote speakers. Closing out the week on a high note by featuring yet another of our brilliant guest experts in our 5th annual World Changers report — the ever fabulous Ragne Maasel! Ragne and I had the pleasure of collaborating on a piece for UNLEASH last autumn, and she was so great I asked her back for World Changers. Here are some of the valuable insights she shares for ESG leaders: "I’ve been asked to define ESG – but what is it really? It isn’t a set of activities, because when you start thinking about ESG in that sense, you’re missing the point. For me, it’s a management philosophy.” “It’s not about what you are doing; it’s about doing things differently.” “It’s about stretching your perspectives, both horizontally in terms of timeframes, but also vertically in terms of what you will accomplish. In my conversations with #CSOs and influential leaders shaping the sustainability landscape, a recurring motif emerges as a significant hurdle - even for those at the forefront of change: Navigating the complex dynamics of corporate buy-in for ESG initiatives. It’s such a critical component of success, but one of the trickiest to get right too. Well, here are a few thoughts around how to engage others on the journey. Be clear on the why. This matters most when looking to secure buy-in from senior leadership. At the end of the day, impact initiatives require investment and they rarely have an immediate financial benefit. So, as a sustainability professional, you need to be crystal clear on the ‘why’ for your organization. Will it improve loyalty among your consumers? Will it create longer-term commercial sustainability? Will it engage employees and improve retention? Ensure ESG is aligned with the broader values of the business. An ESG program doesn’t look the same in every business. Nor should it. The focus needs to be carefully aligned with the experience and expertise of the company and its people, or it risks feeling disconnected from the day-to-day. What do people in the organization care about? If you want buy-in from the rest of the company’s workforce, then zero in on issues they’re already engaged with as a starting point. Don’t know? Recently, I have been contemplating the idea of embracing leadership from unexpected vantage points—leading from behind. Now, let's delve deeper into how this concept intertwines seamlessly with sustainability in leadership. Too often, we associate leadership with the spotlight, but the essence of impactful leadership lies in the ability to lead from where you stand, even if it means leading from behind. Tying it to sustainability, this concept takes on heightened significance. It's not about being the loudest voice; it's about identifying a role that aligns with your strengths and values and contributing meaningfully to the collective journey towards sustainability. Imagine a world where every individual, regardless of their position or title, embraces a role uniquely suited to them and propels the sustainability agenda forward. Leading from behind in the context of sustainability means recognizing that every action, no matter how seemingly small, contributes to the greater goal. It's about fostering a desire for positive change that permeates every level of an organization, from the boardroom to the grassroots.
