In construction, there are two critical stages: starting and finishing a project. Only a skilful supervisor or engineer can make these stages run smoothly. The middle part is easy. Anyone can do that.
Throughout my career at Sunway, Cypark, and MRCB, for example, I often had to be sent to projects that struggled to start smoothly. Over time, I became very skilful at getting projects off the ground.
The Project Manager at Sunway brought me in because he was tired of dealing with projects that didn't start smoothly. The General Manager at Cypark said, "You have to be on site. When you're there, things get moving." The late Vice President of MRCB sent me to a challenging project in Melaka. When I wanted to quit because it interfered with my MBA classes, he called and said, "Why do you want to quit? I've checked with the client and consultants; they are happy with your work."
Finishing a project also requires skill, which I find even more challenging. At the final stages, we need skilled workers for termination work. General workers can't do it well.
This is because clients often confuse unfinished work with low-quality work (due to unskilled workers). That's why it's frustrating when the work seems never-ending.
Nowadays, it's hard to find skilled workers. I mean it's expensive. If you can get a good handyman, it's great, because they can do everything well.
