🌍 Globally, extreme weather and climate events are becoming more frequent, with ongoing #climatechange playing a crucial role in this trend. Many events reach catastrophic proportions, resulting in severe social, environmental and economic #impacts.
🌧️ Like other countries, Italy has been particularly affected by #floods and/or #landslides over the last two years.
In many cases, these phenomena also caused loss of life, injuries, and displacement, as evidenced by floods and landslides in September 2022 (Marche Region; 13 fatalities), debris flows/floods in November 2022 (Ischia Island; 12 fatalities), floods and landslides in early May 2023 (Emilia-Romagna Region; 2 fatalities), floods and landslides in mid-May 2023 (again Emilia-Romagna Region; 15 fatalities), floods in July 2023 (Lombardy Region; 1 fatality), floods and landslides of November in (Tuscany Region; 8 fatalities), floods and landslides of June 2024 (Emilia-Romagna Region; 1 fatality), floods and landslides of October 2024 (again Emilia-Romagna Region; 1 fatality).
🏡🌳 Land use analysis is a crucial aspect of assessing climate- and weather-related #risks. It essentially suggests the land management practices in place, which, in turn, reflect the broader (unsustainable) development model adopted at local, regional and even national levels.
It is well known that #soilconsumption refers to irreversible #soilsealing by reducing its natural "sponge effect". This is often accompanied by a worsening of pre-existing slope instability conditions.
#ISPRA has published the annual report on "Land Consumption, Land Dynamics and Ecosystem Services" in Italy.
Data are critical. Between 2022 and 2023, the soil consumption reached 72.5 km2. Excluding areas that have been restored (8.15 km2), this represents a 0.33% increase in soil consumption compared to the previous year.
