There is a shift now towards a holistic "portrait of a graduate" framework. New York is set to transform high school graduation requirements, moving beyond traditional Regents exams and calling for the state to redefine credits to focus on proficiency, expanding the ways students can show their skills to include options like capstone learning projects, work-based learning experiences, and more. As students now have various options to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, the need for robust monitoring and tracking systems becomes evident. I strongly believe, as long as we don’t try to protect the past, we have the freedom to reinvent ourselves indefinitely.
From the one-size-fits-all approach to the emphasis on memorization over critical thinking, there are plenty of reasons why the next generation is giving traditional education a serious side-eye. So, let’s look at 17 of the biggest factors that are making people rethink the way we learn and teach: 1. Lack of Personalization 2. Outdated Curriculum 3. Emphasis on Memorization 4. Rising Costs 5. Inflexible Learning Environments 6. Overemphasis on Standardized Testing 7. Limited Focus on Life Skills 8. Technological Integration 9. Teacher-Centered Approaches 10. Lack of Real-World Application 11. Decreased Attention Spans 12. Increased Awareness of Alternative Education Paths 13. Mental Health Concerns 14. Diversity and Inclusion Issues 15. Changing Job Market 16. Environmental and Global Challenges not addressed 17. Desire for Autonomy and Self-Directed Learning

How is the 21st century affecting post-secondary education?? It's no longer about just learning the vocational content of a program -- today's learners need to master the soft-skills, particularly how to think, ask questions and communicate their ideas. Attached is my Master's project -- Catching up to yesterday: https://lnkd.in/gZVZKN5m
Catching up to Yesterday: An argument for a practical application of creativity for inspiring change from a content-based course delivery to a 21st-century skills-based delivery

❗ The 7 Cs: How We, as Teachers, Should Prepare Our Students for the Future❗ 🗯 “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” – John Dewey Many thanks to Pui Ying Law for her comprehensive and nuanced article on the topic of “The Role of the 7 Cs in Education.” Building on the insights of P21 (Partnership for 21st Century Learning) regarding the essential skills needed for the 21st century, which should, therefore, play a key role in education, she references the book by Bernie Trilling and Charles Fadel, 21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times, and thoroughly explains the 7 Cs: 🚀 #CriticalThinking 🚀 #Creativity 🚀 #Collaboration 🚀 #Communication 🚀 #Computing 🚀 #CrossCulturalUnderstanding 🚀 #Career Without delving into each of these skills in detail (you can explore them fully in the article or the aforementioned book), one thing becomes clear: 💪 the focus is on #skills, not #knowledge. This shift has been demanding a change in educators' #mindset for quite some time and is, in fact, nothing new. These topics have long been reflected in curricula and many educational debates. However, as this new school year begins, it serves as a personal reminder of what truly matters if I want to ensure my students, through the education I provide, can thrive in the future labor market and in life. Here are a few key areas I like to emphasize: 🚀 Developing #networks and #connections. 🚀 The ability to #collaborate and #compromise, breaking down barriers between #diverseethnicgroups. 🚀 Life is and always will be complex with constant #changes; therefore, the ability to solve problems effectively and embrace #lifelonglearning is essential. 🚀 Being open to #creativity and #innovation. 🚀 Transform the classroom into an active space for inquiry, #discussion, #questioning, and #debate (this is part of fostering democratic citizenship in the 21st century). When I think of my students learning German as a second language, who represent the world in the classroom, my elective course in "Business Psychology," and my Latin class where we discuss "Politics in Times of Crisis," these serve as great cornerstones to guide our focus. With that in mind, I wish everyone a great start to the new school year. And, of course, I look forward to exchanging experiences and engaging in discussions. #education #school #coaching #3workscoaching

The #ANCC has been a few steps ahead here! In 2013, it created a professional development currency decoupled from time that focuses on achievement of competencies and learning outcomes. The outcome-based CE model challenges time based learning, and OBCE level credit is evidence of mastery in identitied domains. The OBCE level credit is currency can be easily adopted into academic learning and degree attainment. We would love to share this work with ETS and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to ensure that learning in academia and practice are speaking the same language. #learningculture #leadinglearning #anccncpd #futureoflearning #growthmindset #
I was honored to speak with TIME about the paradigm shift we’re undertaking at ETS, alongside Timothy Knowles and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Central to this shift is dismantling the 117 year old Carnegie Unit, which to this day has set a precedent for how we measure learning and dictates who graduates university. We’re finally taking a meaningful step forward in challenging these outdated assessments of the past and forging a future ahead where students’ successes can be recognized, rather than proven by standardized tests and assessments. The solution? Skills-based assessments that accurately reflect students’ competencies, rather than socioeconomic factors and test-taking ability. Want to learn more? Homogenization in #education diminishes the uniqueness of institutions and stifles the brilliance and #creativity that society desperately needs. By pushing all #schools to follow the same model, we risk losing the diversity of skills and approaches that different individuals and communities require. This factory-like approach to education, where #students are treated as products, strips away their humanity and fails to nurture their individual potential. To combat this, we must embrace educational practices like #Agile that prioritize #creativity, higher-level thinking, and personal growth. Agile allows institutions to celebrate human nuance, encouraging environments where students can develop their unique talents. By shifting the focus from standardization to #innovation and personalized learning, we can create a more vibrant educational landscape that truly prepares individuals to contribute meaningfully to society. The #futureofeducation is Agile. #Educationalagility #AgileEducation #AIEducation #HigherEd #Humanbasedlearning #HIM #Futureready https://lnkd.in/eCnYYT78

A 16-year-old Gen Z'er shared an interesting blog--Why Education Is No Longer About Learning. Her paradigm shift for a modern approach to education seeks less exams more Real Life skills. "Soft skills such as communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability (which are more important than theoretical knowledge!) are hardly taught. Things like financial literacy, social media literacy, self defence and decision-making which are of day-to-day use in the real world are totally neglected. Students fail to learn the REAL knowledge that comes of REAL use to them." Not a new idea but still good food for thought from a young mind. https://lnkd.in/gn3GJjD4.
