🛫 Norwegian Adds New Summer Destination: Riga – Burgas Norwegian is expanding its route network from RIX Riga Airport! Starting June 14, 2025, flights to Burgas will operate once a week on Saturdays, offering the perfect summer getaway. 🌊 🌏 With this addition, Norwegian now connects Riga to nine destinations, including Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Alicante, London, Split, Tivat, and Trondheim, further strengthening its presence since opening a base in Riga in 2024. Did you know that the port of Turku was already known even in the Mediterranean countries in the 12th century? For that we are to thank the Arab Al-Idris who drew the port under the name Abuwa in his map in 1154. This year will therefore be 870 years since the first proven appearance of the port on maps. During the anniversary year, we take a peek into the past with the help of old photos. In post-war Finland, traveling abroad was only a distant dream. Even in the early 1950s, for example, a ferry trip to Sweden was considered a luxury. However, during the 1950s, tourism became more common, and as ferry travel became more popular, there was a demand for increased passenger capacity on ships. The steamship S/S Wellamo was built in 1927. After World War II, in 1945, the vessel was converted to be oil-heated and equipped with radar - the second Finnish vessel to do so. Wellamo's large passenger capacity served on the Turku–Mariehamn–Stockholm route between 1945–1960. #870thanniversary #throwbackthursday

The comfort of traveling with family and the ease of bypassing congestions, especially around the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland, reminded me of why I love train travel so much. 😎💡 As an international train enthusiast, I’ve always dreamt of an extraordinary rail adventure: a journey from Europe to Asia, starting in my hometown of Bern, Switzerland, and reaching the vibrant city of Beijing, China. 🇨🇳 Imagine embarking on this epic trip, starting amidst the stunning Swiss Alps, traversing Austria’s and Poland’s historic sites, and journeying through either the vast landscapes of Central Asia or the intriguing expanses of Russia. The route could follow the ancient Silk Road, stopping in iconic cities like Samarkand, before finally reaching the heart of China. While this journey isn’t possible at the moment due to current geopolitical situations, it encapsulates the spirit of what we at Rail Europe strive for: connecting people, cultures, and breathtaking landscapes through sustainable and unforgettable travel experiences. We have it all – authentic winters, the midnight sun, vast silence, tranquility, and so much more to captivate and enchant tourists from all over the world. And let’s not forget: northern Sweden already has excellent airports with the capacity to welcome international travelers, making it easy to reach this stunning part of the world. With determination, collaboration, and smart investments, we could take this growing industry to even greater heights. I know there are many skilled and passionate people in the tourism sector in northern Sweden, already working hard to develop this region. But when I see those planes flying toward Finland, I’m convinced that we, too, have the potential to do more – to make northern Sweden a world-class destination for adventure and serenity alike.
