𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆? When we move abroad, we are in a very vulnerable state, of "high exposure," stress just around the corner. A lot of what we face is new, unknown, scary, and has a psychological effect: we may become insecure, generate new fears, and things as simple as getting a haircut can be tasks that create anxiety and paralyze us. I have identified three types of dependency phenomena that are caused or exacerbated by moving abroad for love. 🌿 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹. Most likely, our partner, whether we like it or not, will become our world. We wait for them to come home to tell them everything, and much of what we do or don't do is based on their schedule and availability. 🌿𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹. When we arrive, probably the first acquaintances we will have will be the ones from our partner. Our social life, in general, will revolve around our partner's friends and family. 🌿𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹. It has little to do with a lack of money. Probably our partner gladly finances a lot of what we need/want. It doesn't make it easier, mainly because it has a powerful emotional component, including shame and frustration. Creating, maintaining, and nurturing friendships 🤝🏼 while living abroad can be a significant challenge. 🌎When you embark on your expat journey, you leave behind loved ones and arrive in a place where, oftentimes, you know no one. Naturally, you turn to those back home, but you come to realize that they might not fully understand your struggles. The challenges expatriates face are unique to this lifestyle and prove intricate to grasp without personal experience. 😢 Feeling overwhelmed, even shedding tears in a supermarket aisle due to the inability to find the right tomato sauce, might appear utterly absurd to a non-expatriate. Yet, this is the reality. Simple everyday tasks can transform into nightmares when you are torn away from your bearings. Consequently, the search begins for individuals who truly empathize. Many expats yearn to befriend locals, veering away from fellow expatriates and compatriots. 🫶🏼 However, rapid and robust bonds form among expats as you share the same experience. Instant understanding is established, and barriers are shattered. 🌎 What if culture shock is not anymore the key adjusting variable anymore when living abroad? 👉 Time to revisit the aging standard expat adjustment models - too much anchored in cross cultural differences impacts⤵️⤵️⤵️ 👉 Culture shocks are indeed nowadays much better self-dealt with due to ✅ our increased travels abroad, ✅ the instant communication one can have with their loved ones/friends if homesick, ✅ our access to enormous amount of learning resources online or off ✅ and not forgetting countless cross cultural trainings available in companies. 💡But research and testimonials show today that what people suffer the most from during expatriation now is loneliness and this is not necessary linked to cultural differences effects! “Loneliness is about not feeling connected with other people. You don't have to be alone to feel lonely. You can participate in everything, be among people and still feel lonely. You then feel no connection with others. A connection is more than having a common hobby. It's also about trusting the other, daring to share things: then you connect with other people.” Loneliness can be divided into roughly two different forms: social loneliness and emotional loneliness. 👉 Needless to say the impact on mental health and as a matter of fact on performance 💡 To help on an efficient way, to support properly expats abroad (and that includes international students) it is important to adjust our trainings - preparation - coaching - accordingly and tackle this well 🌎 #expatriation #mentalhealth #daretochange #tabooaroundexpat
