The NBA is adding live betting to NBA League Pass. Viewers will be able to see betting lines on the screen in real-time, select the bet they want to place, and then be taken directly to FanDuel or DraftKings to place it. This feels like a natural extension and something every league will do in the future. But I also don't think we talk about the negative consequences enough. Sports fans today are seeing gambling ads EVERYWHERE they go, from podcasts and TV shows to team jerseys and now in-game broadcasts. There is little to no regulation in the space, and with companies spending billions of dollars on advertisements every year, young people getting interested in sports today will grow up in a world where the two are always connected. That can have a really negative long-term impact on viewership and fan engagement. Plus, we've already seen this play out in real time. Virtually every single U.S. sports team/league has gone all in on gambling while simultaneously watching their European counterparts try to reverse the trend because things got out of control. Some of it is greed — ticket prices and media rights can only increase so much, and sports gambling revenue is net new to a team/league's bottom line. But not all revenue is good revenue.
