For years we've been taught to yell at our dogs when they do something wrong. Not only is it likely to be ineffective, but it could actually make some problems much worse. In my latest blog I discuss four reasons why you shouldn't yell at your dog! Check it out... #dogbehaviour #forcecfree https://buff.ly/46c5q0p

I was at a communication workshop the other day and I was told I needed to be more assertive in the way I spoke to my dog behaviour clients. They told me that my clients needed to know when they had made mistakes in the past and if that caused them pain, then that’s good, because without that pain they would never change. This was hard to hear, they were quite assertive! I’ve spent 20 years avoiding aversive coaching methods on my dogs, and their people. I pride myself on being non-judgemental and solution focused, and this statement took me right back in time. Research has taught us that we can achieve amazing results with our dogs without resorting to pain and discomfort; surely that’s the same for people? No one needs to feel pain to learn and grow. Not our dogs, not our clients, not our team members, not anyone. Inflicting pain is punishment; whether that is psychological or physical and in any quantity. Aversive methods destroy confidence, erode resilience, and alienate the client,. Nurturing growth and change is far more effective at solving problems and making change, whist preserving the relationship and building trust. I lost interest in the rest of the workshop and left early. Only afterwards realising that she had proved my exact point. I hadn’t seen the light and resolved to do things differently. Quite the opposite. I was frustrated and disengaged, and spent the next few hours feeling irritated by the whole experience.

Great start to the week, this has absolutely made my day. My soggy squirrel was highly commended last month by the Institute of Photography; which was awesome enough. But to then be selected as a runner up in their photo of the month competition is just incredible. The judges said "This is a great example of a number of elements coming together to create one overall superb shot. Caroline has captured an excellent composition that is dynamic and pleasing to the eye. The colours are harmonious and complimentary to the subject and the overall effect is a compelling nature shot." Original post... https://lnkd.in/dYAjrbce

Check out my latest video on YouTube... Can Scent Training Solve Canine Behaviour Problems? - 3 Case Studies In this video, I delve into the fascinating world of scent training for dogs and its profound benefits. From mantrailing to search and rescue missions, scent training can offer more than just a hobby or job for dogs, but it can also be crucial for their mental well-being. Dogs perceive the world primarily through their noses, unlike humans who rely on vision. By encouraging dogs to engage their sense of smell, we unlock a wealth of information about their environment, promoting mental stimulation and fulfilment. Throughout the video, I discuss three different studies, including Lola, the "unemployed workaholic," Yogi, the perpetually energetic pup, and Toto, the reactive guard dog. Through scent training, these dogs find purpose, mental calmness, and a deeper connection with their owners. I delve into the physiological and psychological aspects of scent training, explaining how it triggers the rest and digest mode in dogs, essential for their overall well-being. By engaging in scent training, dogs not only fulfill their natural instincts but also strengthen their bond with their owners. Whether your dog faces behavioural challenges or simply seeks enrichment, scent training offers a transformative experience. Join me as I explore the world of scent training and its positive impact on canine companionship. If you're looking to embark on a rewarding journey with your furry friend, scent training might be just what you need. Check out my latest video on YouTube... Can a Canine Behaviourist Offer Guarantees? - What Every Owner Needs to Consider In this video, I delve into a common question: can behaviourists or trainers offer guarantees for dog training? Many dog owners, understandably, seek assurances when investing in training services. However, it's essential to understand why guarantees are seldom provided. As a behaviourist, my role is to assess your dog's behaviour, devise a tailored plan, and provide guidance based on years of experience and training. I offer specific techniques and recommendations to address your dog's issues, aiming for positive outcomes. However, the effectiveness of the training plan depends on various factors, many of which are beyond the behaviourist's control. Once I provide guidance, it's up to you, the dog owner, to implement the techniques consistently and patiently. Your commitment to following the plan is crucial, as inconsistent implementation or conflicting methods from other family members can hinder progress. Additionally, unforeseen circumstances, such as your dog's health issues or unexpected environmental stimuli, can disrupt the training process. While trainers and behaviourists strive to offer support and aftercare, they cannot predict or control every aspect of the training journey. Reviews from other clients can provide insight into a behaviourist's approach and success rate, but they should be interpreted with caution, considering the complexities involved. Ultimately, successful training outcomes depend on your dedication and your dog's response to the training methods. While guarantees may not be feasible, a reputable behaviourist will offer ongoing support and guidance to help you navigate the challenges of dog training. So, when seeking a behaviourist or trainer, look for someone who provides comprehensive support, is willing to adjust strategies as needed, and has a track record of success backed by client testimonials. Remember, while guarantees may be elusive, dedication and collaboration between you and your behaviourist can lead to positive results in your dog's behaviour. I hope this video sheds light on why guarantees in dog training are rare and what to look for when choosing a behaviourist. Stay tuned for more insights in future videos. Take care, and bye for now! 00:00 - Introduction 00:53 - A Behaviourist Is Just An Advisor 01:52 - It's You Who Will Be Putting In The Work 03:52 - Your Dog Has A Role To Play Too 06:31 - The Rest Of The World Can Get In The Way 08:03 - What Should You Expect From Your Behaviourist? 11:24 - Maybe I Should Ask You For a Guarantee? ;P You might also be interested in this blog: Assessing Behaviour for Dog Training: https://lnkd.in/eewEbhJr Online Dog Behaviour Advice and Coaching: https://lnkd.in/eJ8xc_Z8 Also check out my Free Reactive Behaviour Support Group: www.facebo

Check out my latest video on YouTube... Resilience Over Training: The Key to a Well-Behaved Dog Have you ever wondered why some dogs seem perfectly trained while others struggle with anxiety and aggression? In this video, I'll delve into the fascinating world of canine behaviour and why traditional dog training methods may not always lead to the desired outcomes. People often assume that my dogs must be impeccably trained, but the truth is, I'm not a dog trainer in the traditional sense. Instead, I focus on understanding and addressing the underlying needs of dogs to foster resilience and sociability. Join me as I share my journey with Molly, my Bernese Mountain dog, who despite being trained in numerous tricks, still struggled with aggression and anxiety. I'll explain why simply training dogs to perform tricks isn't enough to address behavioural issues and how we need to focus on building resilience and reducing anxiety instead. Through real-life examples and practical insights, I'll guide you through the importance of understanding reward systems, meeting your dog's primal needs, and fostering confidence and resilience. Check out my latest video on YouTube... Mouthing and Grabbing - One Problem, Three Solutions Lets look at the common issue of mouthing in dogs and offers solutions based on three case studies: Teddy, Lola, and Codi. Teddy, a four-month-old puppy, exhibits mouthing due to overexcitement, and the solution involves socialization, recall training, and managing excitement. Lola, a frustrated nine-month-old cockapoo, faces inconsistency in training, leading to mouthing. The solution focuses on addressing frustration, consistent training, and removing common frustrators. Codi, a two-year-old collie, experiences mouthing due to overtiredness and overstimulation. The solution includes creating a restful environment, setting nap times, and reducing overstimulation. It's really important to understand each dog's unique needs and address underlying causes to effectively solve mouthing issues, as the common advice on the internet might not be your best solution! 00:00 - Introduction 00:54 - Teddy's Story: Overexcitement 03:49 - Solutions That Helped Teddy 09:51 - Lola's Story: Frustration and Pain 12:42 - Solutions That Helped Lola 18:58 - Codi's Story: Overtired and Overstimulated 21:15 - Solutions That Helped Codi 26:06 - Comparing The Common Advice Also check out: Addressing needs in dogs... getting to the heart of the behaviour problem: https://lnkd.in/eVBF2By3 What does "over threshold" mean in dog behaviour?
