“What is true north? True north is the direction that points directly towards the geographic North Pole. This is a fixed point on the Earth’s globe. What is magnetic north - and why is it different to true north? True north is a fixed point on the globe. Magnetic north is quite different. Magnetic north is the direction that a compass needle points to as it aligns with the Earth’s magnetic field. What is interesting is that the magnetic North Pole shifts and changes over time in response to changes in the Earth’s magnetic core. It is not a fixed point.” ~Royal Museums Greenwich (https://lnkd.in/eb-yF3mj) Springhouse’s True North program is an opportunity to explore what it means for adults to love and serve from a place of wholeness and Life, not by shifting, unsteady societal “norms.” Consider joining me, Carolyn, on a journey of deep discovery, empowerment, and grace. Museums today are at a critical threshold between being static repositories and becoming experiential and inspirational places for regenerative cultures. In a world that suffers a lack of alternative realities and possible futures in the face of multiplying and intensifying crises, museums can play a key role as laboratories for more dynamic ways of being, belonging, and cherishing beauty. As repositories of history, arts, and culture, museums are already telling stories about who we are, how we look at the world, and what we could become. Which role could communications play for re-writing the story of museums as birthplaces for thriving cultures and places? How can designers bring audiences closer to science stories? How can you bring ice into a museum without it melting? This project started as an obsession with glaciers as archives of data, and a desire to illustrate these otherwise unseen depths. All too often, we value the world around us for its untapped resources or potential economic advantages. And it is too easy to forget both the interdependence between ourselves and our planet, and the importance of advocating for nature’s agency and protection. Overture(Polar) was exhibited at the MSU Museum in the New Horizons Gallery in Fall of 2022 in East Lansing, Michigan.

Researchers believe they have found the wreck of the HMS Stephen Furness, a ship that’s been lost to the bottom of the Irish sea along with over 100 crew for more than a century, after it was sunk in WWII. With AHRC funding, the Unpath’d Waters project was able to locate the shipwreck by combining resources and new data through a digital ‘hyper network’, uniting UK’s museums, galleries, libraries and archives. Professor Christopher Smith, Executive Chair for AHRC shares his thoughts: “This is a thrilling discovery and a testament to power AHRC aims to unleash by connecting the disparate collections of information and material held by the UK’s various heritage institutions through the Towards a National Collection project. The exemplary work of the Unpath’d Waters has revealed, at long last, the resting place of over a hundred men who died under tragic circumstances and gives us a tantalising hint at the historical riches concealed within the waters that surround our island. If the work of Towards a National Collection is already leading to finds this exciting, I cannot wait to see what else it might enable in the future.” Find out more on this incredible collaboration and what it means for maritime heritage: https://lnkd.in/e8pZDpzM
