What does #LGBTQI+ inclusive #palliative and end-of-life care entail and how can we achieve it? Marion and I discussed this with the audience of the national palliative care conference last week. The interactive presentation was based on my ongoing postdoc research project investigating LGBTQI+ perspectives on dying, death, loss and care at the end of life. As part of this research I organize "DöBra rainbow cafe's" with various community leaders and organizations to explore how we can create supportive LGBTQI+ spaces around these issues. As someone who struggled with isolation, as 'a Deafblind person in a world designed mostly for sighted, hearing people, as a guide dog partner facing public rejection on a regular basis, becoming a Commissioner of the World Health Organization’s new Commission on Social Connection is a tremendous honor. I’m excited to serve, amplifying the issues & innovative solutions within the disability community. Starting now. What are some of your favorite examples of strategies disabled people developed to resist isolation? Learn more about the Commission: https://lnkd.in/g53xwY6p Photo: The top left of the image shows Haben Girma, a Black woman in her thirties wearing a thoughtful expression. The top right has a stylized letter C, and below that is text: "We know constraints become catalysts for innovation. Understanding how people with different bodies/minds resist isolation is critical. To increase social connection, listen to disabled people. Haben Girma WHO Commissioner on Social Connection. WHO Commission on Social Connection, World Health Organization.” #PowerOfConnection

On International Day of People with Disability (#IWPWD) you might be interested in a couple of videos by ReBUILD members which explore the considerations and challenges of producing disability-inclusive health systems research. Our most recent is from Thazin La of Burnet Institute and was presented at our recent consortium workshop. In the presentation - Including and engaging disabled participants in research in #Myanmar - Thazin explores and reflects on her team's recent experience in engaging community members with disabilities in research and the lessons learnt. Watch that presentation here: https://lnkd.in/dB-7Nh4K Then looking back a couple of years - but it's no less relevant for that - we have Disability-inclusive health systems research in fragile and shock-prone setting. Presentations and a panel session from people working in the field. Together they consider how we might deliver disability-inclusive health systems research. That video is here: https://lnkd.in/dThVRBvd

Yes, we CAN! 💪 We believe in creating a workplace that's inclusive for everyone, regardless of their abilities or conditions. That's why we're proud to introduce the Champions of Accessibility Network (CAN) - a platform dedicated to learning, sharing advice, advocating, and raising awareness on accessibility. Their mission is clear: drive action and break down barriers that affect disabled, impaired, and neurodivergent individuals. Whether the condition is visible or not, permanent or temporary, every voice matters 🗣 Last week, we were proud to celebrate #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek (#IDW). It's a global initiative that sheds light on conditions that may not always be visible, but are equally significant, e. g. autism, epilepsy, deafness, chronic fatigue, diabetes, etc. To extend our knowledge towards all of our colleagues, several events surrounding different conditions have already taken place and will continue to take place throughout the next weeks. Let's build a more inclusive future, one step at a time 👣 #AccessibilityMatters #InclusionAtWork Richard E. I Enya Barry I Sarah Reeves I Tim Boon I Tanja W.
