Lessons From My Dog Gunner: PRAISE Amazing what we can learn from our dogs, Gunner not only lights up and repeats behavior when he gets praise - he then praises others. Whether it is a wag of his tail, the look on his face, or the loving nudge he gives - praise is contagious. This reminds me to praise and recognize others. People need to know they did "good" or get a "bone" for their accomplishments. Just like with a dog, timing is everything. Immediate reinforcement encourages continued performance. Don't be vague "good job" be specific pointing out exactly what they did "good potty?" We thrive on consistent praise. Do it often to build trust. Be sure to tailor your praise to fit what motivates them. Gunner isn't motivated by food. He likes me to make a big deal, show excitement when he accomplishes something. Praise publicly - let everyone know and celebrate. Just think, you can make a difference everyday and create a culture of praise. Start now!
